“Bah Humbug” - Second Life Parties for the Scrooge in Us

Christmas can be fun, but it can also be a pain. The shopping, the crowds, the parking, the driving in cold temperatures, the forgetting about the cultural and religious orgins, the phoniness of some people, etc. It’s enough to make one scream “Bah Humbug!” So to have fun at the expense of the hassle side of the holidays, a couple clubs in Second Life held events poking fun at it.

On Saturday December 25th Christmas Day, the Queen of Hearts riverboat club in Mystery held an “Evil Christmas” party at Noon, “The Queen of Hearts is both pleased and proud to present our very own DJ Bloodrose Writer! He will be spinning romance humor and traditional songs of Christmas and party. He calls it ‘Evil Christmas,” but he will play all hits of the season. Celebrating both the Scrooge/Grinch of Christmas and the Santa/Angels of the holiday!” Instead of the usual male and female contests, there prizes were for the best Scrooge/Grinch look, and the best Christmas Spirit, a one thousand Linden prize for each.

And what a party it was, DJ Bloodrose opening things up with his trademark evil laugh heard across the sim. Inside the Queen, revelers of both stripes came to the club. Some dressed in festive colors, red, white, green, or some combination. DJ Blodrose came in black of course, as did a number of others. One girl brought with her a Grinch doll. Another came in a vampire bat avatar wearing a Santa hat, “sometimes Christmas can be such a pain in the neck.” And one guy came by as a vagrant with a bottle, drinking from it (hic).

DJ Bloodrose played a number of songs, from “All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth,” to parodies such as “The Twelve Pains of Christmas” and “The Night Santa Went Crazy” and others. But he also accepted songs from the “fluffies” as he called those sticking with the sunny side of the holidays. A couple times Bloodrose would rez some snowmen, egging people to melt them with whatever they had.

The party went on for two hours. At the end, the “Best Grinch” was declared to be Arthas Darkfury. The “Best in Christmas Spirit” prize was split between Lane Weiser, and Angel4u Crazyboi.

Mystery was not alone in thinking there was something a bit saccharine sweet about the holidays. Nydia Tungsten decided to have her own bit of fun at it’s expense with the “Anti-Christmas Party” at Club Zero, “Yes, now is the time of year when we have had it up to *here* with all those sugary sweet TV specials and all those stores trying to get us to buy what ever piece of cr*p they had too many of, etc..etc... So we have the answer: the most irreverent, filthiest, and funniest Christmas songs ever made. We have $1000L's on each board. This all starts at 2 PM SL time. Your DJ will be yours truly. Hope to see you soon.”

The party wasn’t announced ahead of time, people given only a few hours notice. Still, a number came by to have a little fun. Some of the crowd switched to skunk avatars for the party, “Merry Stinkin’ Christmas.” One donned an American flag shirt, and lit a sparkler, feeling more in a 4rth of July mood, or perhaps wanted to get to a holiday as far away from Christmas as you could get.

As DJ, Nydia lived up to her nickname of “Naughty Nydia” with her selection of parodies. Some were tame such as “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” But others had a little edge such as “Christmas at Ground Zero.” And some were not recommended with little kids around such as “Grandma Got Knocked Up by a Reindeer,” “Holy S*** it’s Christmas,” and “Silent But Deadly Night.”

Second Life had plenty of events for those filled with Christmas Spirit, but it didn’t forget those who felt like giving the phony side the raspberries.

SL Hockey Playoffs SCORE!

The Virtual Hockey League’s playoff pits season champion Lag Riders against the leading WildKatz team, ahead 3 games to 2 in December 20’s intense competition. Epic hockey fights erupted, leading an injured player to burst RL stitches in fierce competition. Dramatic moments at the top of Game II 3rd quarter forced Lag Rider’s Captain Antonia Foggarty to shout “TIME OUT” and scream, “I will NOT sacrifice my players health!”… even though VHL’s Stanley Cup hung in the balance!

Picture 1 shows Lag Rider's star forward Beavis Beckham controlling the puck. Games start with Live Music , and teams facing off across the ice. Picture 2 are the defenders game faces. Grrrrr! In Picture 3, Mythil Woyseck does his furry best to defend Lag Rider's goal.

Goalie Faith Faudeburgh, gave me some encouragement before the game: "writing is magic......well written piece has pitch and timbor like a song.......makes you want to find more." Wow! Brains, fabulous art-sense, and hockey brawn! Only in Second Life folks!

They Had Him COVERED

From the man who brought us The ORIGINALS and Monsters series of events, once again, POL Arida orchestrated yet another unique even in the SL music community. This event, titled "COVERED," can only be called a tribute to the man and his music. On Sunday, 28 November, at the Idle Rogue venue, 10 enormously talented musicians came together, each covering one or more of POL's original songs.

The event was coordinated by Ms. Elura Galacia, an avid fan, who played the gracious host throughout the two and a half hour event. The venue was donated by ChryBlind Scribe and the all musicians donated their time, performing free of charge.

Opening up the show with 'Brief Encounter' were Lexie Luan and Zorch Boomhauer. This was followed with the pairing of Zorch and Nya Raymaker, Zorch streaming from the US and Nya from Germany. They performed the very poignant song 'The Suicide of Jane,' a song based on a RL experience of POL's.

Next up was Hazideon Zarco, another well known musician, doing his rather interesting rendition of the song '1,' a song about collective and singular responsibility in the world. Taking the stage next was the talented DeadEye Foggarty, who did a very POL-like version of 'Gotta Get Out of Here.' With a slightly slower tempo, DE did the song incredible justice. He next performed 'The Last Song,' ad libbing POL's story about this song with his own version of POL's encounter with the dreaded Joneses and the awful spaghetti Bolognese, as well as the rather less than satisfying consequences of the actions on that chaotic evening. Well done, DE, very creative indeed.

This was followed by a Lexie solo cover of 'Mother of Three' accompanied by Zorch on guitar. Lexie commented that she chose this song because it has personal meaning for her. Most especially, it has deep meaning for POL as it is written about his own mother, widowed at a young age leaving her alone to fend for herself and her 3 boys. Zorch then performed 'Love Confessions of a Serial Killer' with Lexie accompanying, followed by 'Happy Go Lucky Girl' with a very Zorch twist.

Rising to the occasion next was the inimitable Grace McDunnough performing 'Welcome to Winter' in her sultry style as only Grace can do. Following Grace was "bad boy" himself, BlindBoy Gumbo. BB commented that the first time he heard POL he thought he was rubbish; the second time, worse than rubbish. Fortunately, he came around by the third, fourth or fifth time (BB, why did you keep coming back?). BB played 'Catch the Wind.' Imagine POL a la Gumbo, slide guitar and all!

Once the piano movers got her piano into place on the stage, Phemie Alcott did a beautiful piano version of POL's recent song 'Winning.' Strum Diesel followed Phemie on the piano, leading with one of his own songs and ending with a beautiful segue into POL's 'Passion.' It should be noted that Strum performed while standing on his head on the keyboard!

Next the mastermind of this fantastic event, POL Arida himself took the stage. He performed a handful of songs not covered by any of the other musicians, including, appropriately, 'Screaming Song for a Retard,' which is a personal commentary on how the laws treat mentally retarded adults who unwittingly commit a crime. He also performed 'War Zone,' 'Immune to Collusion,' 'Home' and 'The Birds Fall Down.'

Wrapping up the show, POL commented on the interesting spin the others had done with the covers of his songs. He also noted that during his time performing in SL, not only did his fan base grow, but it included other musicians, which has to be the highest compliment and honor any musician can have. He stated that in the virtual world of SL, music as an art form has not been forgotten or ignored but rather embraced as a true artistic expression, with words that actually convey ideas, thoughts and feelings, contrary to commercial mainstream music.

This event was truly a success and clearly demonstrated the mutual admiration among the musicians here in SL. I look forward to possible future events like this.

(edit, some days after the event, it was made clear Pol Arida was not behind the event)
