RFL 2014 Wrap Up – An Editorial

By DrFran Babcock

Relay For Life of Second Life™ (RFL of SL) is over for another year. This was a very successful year for donations, with over 409,000 US Dollars collected at this point. I had a wonderful Relay this year, working with a solid team, staying on the track for 21 hours, and collecting a lot of money, mostly by selling old gacha items I had in my inventory.

I wanted to take some time to go on record with my thoughts and reactions to the event this year. I will talk about the things I loved and the things that could be made better; maybe next year.

Things to Fix For Next Year

Sim Stability - I am not a noob, and I understand that when too many avatars are on a sim the resources get stressed to the max. I have a very fast computer and very fast Internet. I could not count the times I crashed trying to do the lap with my team. I almost turned off my computer and left the house, because I had become so frustrated.

Lag is not LL’s fault. All of us can and should do all we can to make the team lap a low-lag event. I suggest that the committee recommend that teams dress in system tee shirts, and go bald for this first lap. Will that help? I am not sure, because I have read all kinds of conflicting information about what does and does not put a demand on sim resources. Let’s face it; most of the camps are very high prim and script-filled affairs—my team’s Relay Wizards for Spunky included. However, it’s really the number of avatars on the sim, and I am not wholly sure that a “naked” lap wouldn’t help.

I had no trouble doing laps once it got much later. There were still a lot of avatars on the track, but they were spread out more.

Original vs. Bought Content - I know I may make enemies for saying this, but I have issues with the way some of the camps and designer builds were presented. In my opinion, there is a vast difference between a build that is created by a content creator, and one that is created by buying the work of others, and putting it together as a build.

I understand that many content creators, myself included, can’t make trees and some plants, can’t make hair, avatars, etc. However, I do try to include my own content in the camp, even if it is not as good as what I could buy or modify.

Many of the builds contained works made by Aley (Arcadia Asylum) that are always full perm and easy to modify. I think that if you want to do that, you need to acknowledge that. I write research for a living, and I would never use other’s work without an attribution.
I want to be careful here…I am speaking just for myself and no one else on the SL Newser or in Second Life™, but I fell in love with one of the designer builds (more about this build later), and realized that aside from some trees, the entire build had been constructed by the designer who had been asked to build it. I noticed other designer builds that had entire, large houses from other content creators on them, and these builds seemed to get more attention and accolades. I am not really comfortable about that.
Again, I suggest that the committee create new categories for Best Designer Build that are for mostly original content, and for best use of objects created by others.
I want to give a big shout out to Lilith Heart of Heart Botanicals. Her work, with partner Dolly, was ubiquitous in Relay, and if she treated other camps as she did Relay Wizards, those items were provided free of charge.
What I Loved
Whew, I am glad that’s over. I don’t like being negative, but I have to say what’s on my mind. For the most part, I adored the camps and the laps and the Relay. There is something in me that just melts when I see those lavender arrows on the Relay track. There were many, many, many more things I loved, than didn’t like.
Alia Baroque’s Designer Build -  I went mad for this build, because of it’s look and it had canals! I inspected enough to realize that Alia had done most of the heavy lifting, and that the concept of Birth and Decay was quite moving. It’s impossible to take a bad picture of this build, with its two forums and winding waterways and bridges. If you go inside the buildings strange things can happen to you.
I had been entranced by the way the Fantasy Faire had looked, and hadn’t realized that the main builder for this masterpiece had been the very same Alia Baroque. I IMed him to heap praise on him, and found him to be both humble and inspiring. I immediately went to check out some of his other builds, and I was not disappointed. Alia’s work is definitely worth exploring.
By the time this article is published the sims will be gone. I hope Alia can be convinced to resurrect this build on one of his sims.
Beq Janus' Escher Build - This build has gotten quite a bit of well-deserved attention, and all of it is quite justified. Beq is the only person I know who can make a black and white sim as compelling as the brightly colored builds that surrounded it. Things move, and things don’t move, but your eyes are dazzled as you walk around.
It wasn’t until after the Relay that I got a good look at this build, because the Relay track runs right through the whole thing—uphill and downhill, but not at an angle where I could see it well. The 3-D lizards climbing the wall are fun and very Escher.
The Activities Sims - Grace Loudon was in charge of putting together the area where the opening and closing ceremonies would take place, along with concerts, sales, and even a museum of RFL of SL.
The central meeting places for large events are often overlooked in favor of the activities happening there. Grace’s touch with these four regions is exactly the perfection that was required. Unless you focused specifically on the details, they just became a part of the happy experience. The verdigris walls and lamps were just there in the environment, but they served to pull all of the different areas together. The subtle shading on all the elements provided a soothing balm from the madness of the track. There is even a history museum where you can see the giant hair that cemented Fuzzball Ortega’s title as Spirit of Relay.
Steelhead Salmons Camp - This really was a case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. There were individual items in this build that were exceptional—the sharks, the octopus—but, it really was the entire build that just screamed steampunk. I am always a fan of the steampunk builds, and the Salmons hooked me (like that pun, Bix?).
The build is also educational, and speaks about behaviors in support of treatment and lifestyle. A bit hard to do without modern energy sources, don’t you think?
It’s A Small World, the build you love to hate – Last, I would be remiss if I didn’t salute the Relay Rockers, and their camp build that recreates the Disney Small World Ride. This build, and its ear worm tune, has become a symbol for mock annoyance the world over. Everyone loves to grumble about It’s a Small World After All, at the very same time that they keep getting on the ride.
The Rockers used the ride to point out how very international the fight against cancer has become, and how Relay for Life events are being held all around the world. The committee thought it was a super build, and gave it first prize for Education.
Whatever your response, or story—everyone has a story about this ride—you can’t deny that Second Life™ and Relay for Life have made us a truly international community. The outside world could learn a lot from us.
Conclusion
Relay was mostly wonderful, and only a bit irritating. In fact, the letdown of it being over makes me sad and gets me to think about plans for next year. Our Gold Team Relay Wizards is shooting for platinum next year. I hope to see you there!

Be A Work of Art and Buy a Work of Art: Relay Wizards Plan an Event

By DrFran Babcock

The slogan of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is: Celebrate, Fight Back, Remember. Each year the residents of Second Life™ expend time, love and energy to do just those things, in an effort to conquer the many diseases that make up cancer.

The Relay Wizards for Spunky are together again as a team for the seventh time. Their core membership is solid under the leadership of Team Captain Shawna Montgomery, and co-captains Anhayla Lycia, HALEY Salomon and SpUnKy Young (our survivor), but they are always ready to welcome new members as they did for me and Catboy Qunhua last year, and for Blue Myanamotu, Taralyn Gravois, and Explorer Dastardly this year. The team has been meeting regularly to plan their camp and the events that they hold every year, such as the Dunk the Emperor, in which Tiny Empires creator, Ultralite Soliel, valiantly goes into the drink with good spirits, and lots of laughs.

At one of our planning meetings Explorer suggested that we do an art auction, and we thought that would be a solid idea, as long as Explorer was willing to organize it, and organize it she did.

It is my fervent belief that when something is meant to happen, it happens. That is exactly how the pieces of the auction came together. Taralyn Gravois, probably one of the largest art collectors in the metaverse, offered up her Art Castle as a venue for the event. Over the last few months Explorer has assertively approached SL artists, asking for art donations, canvassed all the members of the Relay Wizards to see if they knew any artists, and continued to meet with us to give us updates. She even held mini-meetings with many of us while we enjoyed our weekly dose of comedy at Lauren’s Place on Tuesday nights.

Little by little the pieces fell together, the event got bigger and bigger, and we all got really excited, because of plans for the opening day. The opening will be a huge costume ball, and you are being asked to come as your favorite work of art, or favorite artist. Veteran Relay Wizards for SpUnKy team member Thickbrick Sleaford has constructed a super-secret dance floor and party area for the opening event.

I have my costume all ready for the big day, and I can hardly wait to see what other people will do. All of this is very, very secret…you just have to come and see. We will have works of art for auction from some of the coolest names in the SL art world including:  Alcibides Zemenis, Bobbi LaSalle (bobbilaval), Bryn Oh, Crap Mariner, Explorer Dastardly, Feathers Boa, Graye Ashbourne, my friend and creative idol: Kake Broek, Lisa Figeuroa, Littleone Arles, Sweet Susanowa, and Van Caerndow (Phil Strang).

Come to the opening for fun, dancing, costumes, famous names in art. Come to gape in wonder at the amazing build for the dance floor. Come to look around Taralyn’s Art Castle to see one of the most varied and inclusive collections of avatar art in the virtual world. Most of all come to support the Relay for Life in combatting the scourge of cancer.

Here are the details for the Relay Wizards for SpUnKy Art Auction:

SL Newser's Anniversary Weekend

By Bixyl Shuftan

Last week was the fourth Anniversary of the launch of the Second Life Newser. From Thursday June 5th to Saturday June 7th, there were four celebrations in it's honor, one for every year of it's operation.

On 6PM SL time on June 5, Club Zero Gravity, the space station club in Purrfection, held the first event. DJ Cynthia Farshore performed the music for the crowd.

DJ Cynthia also played for the event the following day, at the Happy Vixen Beach club at 3PM SL time on Friday June 6, also in Purrfection. Gemma Cleanslate and Theonlyjohnny were there, along with longtime friend Breezes Babi and others. Normally having events on Monday, this was a special event for the club.

June 7 at Noon was the main event, the party at the private beach of our longtime friend Covadonga Writer.

Cova had to leave just as people were showing up, and it wasn't long before Gemma, Grey, Nydia, and others were dancing away

Grease Coakes was the DJ of our happy event. Instead of the Griffin av he's been wearing for so long, he's been appearing more in this "mutant fox" avatar.

Gemma enjoys the fun on the beach deck.

Gray just after her arrival.

TheonlyJohnny in his combat armor from a sim he's been gaming at.

We had no shortage of friends with us. Among those there was Ucello "Uccie" Poultry of "The Poultry Report." Happy Caturday, Uccie.

A friend of Grease's whom was dressed a bit, unusual, for a dance party. She later told me she was going to a mosque that day. Guess one can call it "boogie in a burka."

We had lots of fun that afternoon. After Grease, Qwark Allen showed up to DJ for a while.

Finally at 6PM that day was the last of the Newser events, the party at Club Cutlass, managed by Jenni Greenfield.

Shockwave Yareach was the DJ for the party, attended by estate owner Rita Mariner and many others.

DrFran Babcock was there, with her friend Ariel Loonie, whom was dressed for the "Goat Simulator" game.

So was Eleanor Medier of the Sim Street Jounral.

Some of the partiers dressed the part, with fedoras & overcoats.

Shockwave found several news-themed tunes among the music played, "Do you know how few songs there are about the news?"

It was one fun party, and a great way to end the Newser's anniversary events.

But this isn't the end of this month's parties. We had such a fun time, we're planning one for Qwark and Gemma's home beach on June 21st. Plus, there will be a couple parties at the SL11B Newser exhibit.

Relay Wizards' "Dunk the Emperor"

By DrFran Babcock

There are a few things that you need to know in order for this article to make any sense to you. We will make things easier by explaining:

Relay for Life in Second Life™

Relay for Life in Second Life™ (RFLinSL) began in 2005, headed by Jade Lily, with one team of 315 avatars participating in the event across six sims. Last year, under the leadership of Nikki Mathieson and Co-Chairs: Dwen Dooley and Serina Juran, 200 teams walked 40 sims to raise a whopping $393,000 real dollars for the American Cancer Society. The 2014 Relay is already underway and culminates in the actual 24 hour walk on July 19th-20th. (http://relayforlifeofsecondlife.org )

Tiny Empires

Many consider this HUD-based in-world game to be a scourge, but just as many are entranced by the idea of rising up from a wanderer to a king or queen, and collecting gold, acres, and other prizes. The interesting thing about Tiny Empires is how many people have made friends and found social outlet in this game.

The game is the scripting coup of Ultralite Soliel, the self-appointed Emperor of the Tiny Empire. He is a witty and delightful scripter, and a very good sport, as you shall see. (http://tinyempires.com )

Dunk The Empy!

The Relay Wizards for Spunky are celebrating their seventh year of participation in RFLinSL. Teams hold events in world to raise Lindens for the cause. Captain, Shawna Montgomery is not only a fierce advocate of fundraising for cancer support, but is a Queen of the Kingdom of Avalon in Second Life™. She has played Tiny Empires since its earliest days, and is on a first name basis with Emperor Soleil. One of her co-captain, HALEY Salomon, is the Queen of another Kingdom, Green Acres, and gave money to many of her peers to moisten the Emperor, because her aim was not that true. She did consent to being dunked after it was all over, demonstrating her good nature.

Thus, she was able to convince Emperor Soleil to volunteer for being dunked in a dunk tank by anyone who paid a Relay for Life official vendor for three balls and three chances to throw the Empy in the drink.

Residents were invited to the event that was held in the Kingdom of Avalon. One of the beautiful things about Second Life™ is the sense of community exhibited by so many people. We come together for a common cause without competition and ill will. Members of competing Tiny Empires kingdoms showed up to take a shot at the confident and overly haughty Emperor. The Emperor scoffed at all attempts of dunking him, until he ended up soaked a few times.

Most attendees winced as Ultralite Soleil’s royal robes had to come off, because they were soaked, and then his banana hammock bathing suit was revealed. Some went as far as becoming horrified at the sight. The Empy took it all in stride, and vowed to give gold bars to all who succeeded in dunking him.

Residents danced, threw balls at the Emperor, and laughed and had a very good time. Best of all the event raised almost 15, 000 Lindens for Relay and the American Cancer Society.

All’s Well That Ends Well

It’s hard not to get emotional about this simple, yet complex coming together of people to raise money for the worthy cause of cancer research. The power of groups to change the world is a small miracle.

If you are interested in becoming part of this ever-growing movement to beat back cancer, then perhaps you want to join a team, form a team, or just drop some Lindens in a Relay for Life donation kiosk.

The Relay Wizards for Spunky team will be holding more events up until the big walk/run. Watch for an amazing art auction containing works from the likes of Bryn Oh and Littleone Aries.

Go Relay!

The Bay City Tree Lighting

by DrFran Babcock

On Sunday December 8th Bay City celebrated three hours of music, dancing, ice skating and fun to mark the lighting of the Bay City Christmas Tree. The festivities were also for a cause: Child's Play whose charitable aim is to help children in hospitals with money raised by the gaming industry. Their slogan is: When gamers give back, it makes a difference. To help raise funds many content creators had donated items to Bay City, and these were placed in an area where residents could

Entertainment

GoSpeed Racer was the deejay for the beginning hour, and she spun holiday tunes that were well-known and esoteric. The crowd made a conga line and cheered on the music choices. All of the revelers decided to load test the conga pose balls, and managed to crash the parcel. This is just the kind of fun Second Life™ residents expect at an event..

Christov Kohnke was up next. He might have been short in stature, but  this kid rock pounded out blues on his assorted classical and rock guitars, that he used to accompany his folksy, bluesy voice. By the time he finished his set, the crowd had grown to one frame per second slowness, and Marianne McCann was screaming holiday wishes to all: "Laggy Christmas!"

The last performer was Grace McDunnough, adored by many for her sultry voice, and her ability to connect with her audience. She told use that we would be tortured for the next hour with holiday songs, but, alas, she was wrong. The crowd was appreciative of her talent, and the day closed out with most of the crowd wishing for more.

Fun

If you weren't in the mood for dancing you could go ice skating, or wander the Linden-created lands of Bay City. In addition, the tree is located right in the center of the skating rink. The tree had a number of decorations, including ornaments by BlueGin Yifu and Hyper Mole, whom have passed away.

The event was a great one for people watching, and the paparazzi from the press (cough, cough) snapped pictures with abandon.
