Reader Submitted: Rock Band Tribute Concert At Steelhead

On October 20th, The Johnathan Heiss Project held Scorpions Tribute Concert to promote Steelhead.

They dedicated their time to help Steelhead out, and gave everyone a rocking good time.

It was probably the biggest event to happen in all of Steelhead's history.

More people showed up after these pictures were taken, and everyone enjoyed themselves, the event went smoothly, and Johnathan Heiss has shown an interest in returning to Steelhead for more events.

Just the start of more positive changes coming to Steelhead

Reader Submitted: The Privateers Ball Hauls In A King’s Ransom!

By Cynthia Farshore

On Sunday May 21st Relay For Life Team Aether Chrononauts Tiny Steps or ACTS lead by Wildstar Beaumont  and Liz Wilner held The Privateers Ball Swashbucklers for Life Edition to benefit Relay for Life of Second Life 2023 on Rosehaven Absinthe in the Rosehaven sim group from noon to 2pm SLT. The dance was to raise donations for the American Cancer Society through Relay For Life of Second Life kiosk.

With music DJed by Magda Kamanev, who has done all the Privateers Balls, the dance proved to be promising when within 15 minutes had collected L$35,000. By the time an hour had passed the total climbed to over L$100,000 with around 50 people present. Right at an hour and a half the kiosk hit L$150,000! About this time a challenge was put up that if the total reached L$175,000 then a L$25,000 contribution would be given. It was down to the wire but in the last minutes the kiosk hit L$175,000 but then quickly 185 then 195 and right in the last few seconds L$200,000!!!

Wildstar Beaumont is quoted to say” Thank you so much for being here and for your donations! Including the Ascot kiosks we made more than 250k L$ That is more than 1000 USD for relay for life.” and “when we started the ball team ACTS was sapphire. We sailed through emerald and we are almost ruby now. Thank you all again ! “. With three weeks left till relay weekend it’s going to be interesting just how far this team might go

Reader Submitted: International Women’s Day Cycling Criterium

Report and pics by Claire (aka Atomic Infinity)

March 8th saw an exciting new event for International Women’s Day, held by the Second Life Cycling Federation (SLCF) at their Destiny region race track. One of the many IWD missions is to celebrate the achievements of women in sport, and promote equality and visibility, and while our sport might be ‘virtual’, it still counts!

An international field of six women lined up for the 10-lap race on the road circuit, supported by their partners, friends, and representatives from Wuud On club who sponsored the event to help promote International Women’s Day in Second Life with us. The grey ribbon of asphalt laid out before them consists of straights, hills and technical curves to test the riders skills, technique and tactics. Each rider was supplied with a special edition Zephyr racing bike built by event organizer Bill Jobs (of BJ Bikes and president of the SLCF), and a unique design race cycling outfit to celebrate the day.

The start of the race saw some jostling for position on the road, with each aiming to get a good line through the first few corners. The riders soon began to string out, forming a sinuous line that flowed around the course. The leaders, members of the SLCF and practiced at racing, not surprisingly started to break away from the peloton although even over 10 laps the chasers were never far behind.SLCF rider Claire took an early lead and managed to keep hold of it all the way to finish the 10km distance in 12 minutes 46 seconds. Le Sweetie in second place was a mere 5 seconds later, and Elise in third was not far behind. Artemis, Kyara and Inesye each then crossed the line to further applause.

The award ceremony followed with all the riders being awarded another very special bike by Bill with an exclusive paint finish called Rose & Fire. Then Claire, Le Sweetie and Elise stepped up to the podium to receive their trophies and prizes.

Thanks must go to Bill for holding the event, building the venue and the bikes, and to the Wuuds On club for their generous support to promote International Women’s Day with us. Also thanks to all the participants and onlookers which made the day very special.

I hope all involved felt elated at the celebration of our women racers, and may it be the first of many such events. I certainly felt elated from where I was standing, which lucky for me was the top step of the podium. Sorry for no action photos in the race, I was too busy pedaling!

The Second Life Cycling Federation is open to join and race at no cost. Bikes are provided free, so why not join in with one of the events, or try your skills at the ongoing time-trial timer which is always available.

Reader Submitted: Memorial for Cerdwin Flanagan

By Cynthia Farshore

On May 23rd, a memorial for Cer (Cerdwin Flanagan) was to be held on her land at Witch Woods by Cer and Wolfe from 2PM SL time. However, the crowd grew beyond what it could hold. So the event was moved to The Hideaway. After TPing and links, a large crowd of over 60 formed. Once the music began playing, the pagan ceremony lead by the priest Tamlord Carterhaugh Wood started.

The priest began, "Welcome to this celebration of the life of Cerdwin Flanagan, or Cer as I knew her. She was a lovely woman and touched many of us with sweetness and enthusiasm. Cer was a pagan, so this celebration of her life will be in a pagan format. Please do not lef the word 'pagan' frighten you. All it means is a spiritual path that honors the Nordic/Viking current, and the music will reflect her preferences. Music and ritual have been known to open doors to the Otherworld. There will be drumming and it may carry you away in a light trance. This ritual will me simple. We will also honor the elements of nature. Then we will open our service to your stories. When we open up the ritual for sharing Elayne Diavolo has been kind enough to help. Please submit your request to share a story about Cer to Elayne. Elayne will then call people in order. Let us begin."

At this point, the priest called for everyone to face west and invited the Blessed Ancestors to the Sacred Circle with calls and praises to various spirits. After the priest finished the opening, Elayne Diavolo began calling people in order to tell their stories and relations with Cer, as she was affectionately called, and there were many.

One person, Sinder (Shaldowsin), made a wonderful expression, "Cer, one of the things you said was, 'I live at the speed of my mind, and love with the strength of my heart.' You liked fast, fierce, and more than I could ever know. You were always willing to make a friend, always willing to help, but more than anything, you were supportive, warm, fun. You were like the sun but damned if anyone called you the sun, no that role you gave to me, your little princess of light. You were the night, but if anything, you were the moon, welcoming, and warm on a cold night, so perfect in every way. Magical and mysterious to most. I remember the many times I called you beautiful, which is in my nature when I warm up to someone, and you would always say it was the fairy glamor. That I was the beautiful one. If only you could have seen yourself through my eyes, how you radiated love. You were supportive, to all the creators you knew, musicians, DJs, everyone, even me, you're the reason, I took the dive into meshing and rigging again, your love, your support, it made me feel like I had wings. That there was no mountain I could not conquer. You made a lot of people feel that way. And now it's over, your life ended far too soon. A few parting words, is never enough, but may you dance with the fairy folk and ride with the Valkyrie, and in your downtime, may you tend to the animals like you always wanted. Yes, I remember, our talks about your farm. How I was going to come and help you tend to them."

Another example was Ghost (Xd Fuchs), "I did not know Cer as long or as well as I would have hoped, though, in the time I did know her, she showed that the amount of time you knew someone didn’t always matter. She was so accepting of people and open to connecting with others, and those who are lucky enough to know her were witness to her enthusiasm and support. She had a way of making people heard, felt, and seen. She made an effort to learn about people when meeting them. She radiated passion and excitement for the people and things she loved. Though this is a moment of deep sadness, we should strive to move forward with the same love and compassion Cer showed those she met and grew close to. She so clearly touched the lives of a number of people, and I personally believe she would be happy to see that same care continue to influence others, and spread through the world."

Many spoke and we do not have room here to record all who did but these two examples show the out pouring of love so many had for Cerdwin Flanagan.

The priest closed with, " Powers of the North, West, South and East, we thank you for your presence at this Circle this day.  Go if you must, stay if you will.  Hail and farewell, Blessed Guardians and Friends. Blessed Ancestors who have gone before, we thank you for your presence here. Lend us your aid as we move through these times of difficulty. We close the Door of Death behind you as you return to your rest.  Hail and farewell, blessed Ancestors!"

The ceremony ended with a Pegasus fly-over, many filled the sky. It was very clear that Cerdwin Flanagan had touched the hearts of many, may she find her peace.

Thanks to OldeSoul Eldemar (oldesoul) for this short clip of the Pegasus fly-over

Reader Submitted: American Cancer Society Holds Open House and Ribbon Cutting

By Cynthia Farshore

On Sunday January 26 the Relay For Life of Second life held an Open House and Ribbon Cutting to celebrate the re-opening of the American Cancer Society Campus with a new and much improved sim that was later followed by a special live broadcast of Relay Rap"ACS Day" on T1 Radio. The event started at 12 noon SLT with the open house. The American Cancer Society Campus is a new full estate sim with Information Center, Hope Haven Support Group Building, Events Information building,Catt Gable Memorial Garden, and even an ACS Museum plus more. All is set out in a large open environment and in sections making it easy to go directly to what you are looking for. There is a lot on the sim and you will spend some time covering it all.For a relayer certainly worth it. There were volunteers around to answer questions and give tours.

One of the most touching parts of the campus is the Catt Gable Memorial Garden. It's simple but charming with pictures on easels placed in a square on square multi-layer platforms with just enough plants to add a garden environment. Touching the pictures will give you a note card telling you information about the person. A sign as you enter the memorial garden allows you to place a candle or flowers at the memorial of your choosing that will last for 30 days. If you wish to erect a memorial in honor of a person who has died from cancer contact Zander Greene, ACS Memorial Garden Curator.

While walking through, I found the picture of Artistic Fimicloud, who was one of the Sunweaver community members we lost to cancer. I took a picture, and afterwards I realized it's like she's looking at me as if saying 'Don't forget me.' And seeing that the old team, the Passionate Redheads, has carried on to become the Sunbeamers. No Fimi, you are not forgotten, and we have not quit the fight.

At 3PM SLT people gathered on the roof of the Hope Haven Building and the Ribbon Cutting began with Stingray Raymaker, who is the American Cancer Society Staff Director for the American Cancer Society, Relay For Life of Second Life performing the ribbon cutting.

After 30 minutes of small talk and more coming to take a seat the relay staff sat on a stage and T1 Radio personality Trader Whiplash opened the stream.

For around an hour and a half, they spoke about the things to be found in the various buildings including relay tools, banners, lots of info, and personal interaction with caregivers and survivors. They covered what the relay has done over the years in Second Life which has lead up to over one billion Lindens donated! Then the plans and schedule for this year was discussed. There was much to cover since this year everything is much earlier than prior years. Events included the Home and Garden Expo coming in February and the Fantasy Faire coming in April.

Reader Submitted: Burnstock 2017

By Klaus Bereznyak

Burnstock is a full 36 hours of music from DJs and live performers at the Burn2 Deep Hole Sim this weekend. It's a final, major fundraising event to raise lindens for the week-long Big Burn in the fall. Quite simply, the more money raised the more sims and prims can be available for anyone who wants to contribute builds to the festival in October.

I rezzed at the official landing spot and had to walk a little way to reach the Burnstock stage, heading for all the green dots on the minimap. Having recently hosted a communal installation of art and building celebrating the "conception" of Burn2. The dry, cracked desert surface of the 'playa' has been cleared in accordance with the Principles of Burning Man to "leave no trace," and a stage has been put up in the NW corner to host the event. There's an option to rez an Art Car and drive down there, but the warm desert felt good under my bare feet, recently liberated from the historical garb I prefer to wear around New Toulouse.

Dotted about the playa are kiosks where visitors can donate to "Fuel the Burn" in October. While the Deep Hole Sim itself is sponsored by Burning Man for community building and creative expression throughout the year, money must be raised for the extra sims required during the Big Burn or "Octoburn". Burn2 is an officially sanctioned Burning Man Regional festival. It promotes the Ten Principles of Burning Man, which include an aspiration to "Decommodification" and mean that the festival is intended to be free of commercial sponsorship and advertising.

Other principles of Burning Man include "Radical Inclusion", "Radical Self Reliance" and "Radical Self Expression". In the spirit of these, there was an open invitation for avatars to contribute their own-designed posters for the Burnstock Event, and these are displayed all over the sim en route to the stage.

I arrived to sound of mellow world-fusion vibes on the airwaves as DJ Gleanr rounded off a set. Avatars were dancing in front of the stage, and on the roof of a bus, amid bursts of flame. Burn staff Mia Wallace and iSkye Silverweb were on hand to greet avatars while another veteran burner, Pianoman, took to the stage with a huge, pink piano to play some of his original solo piano compositions.

I suspect he was getting help from the parrot on his shoulder, as some of the pieces had bass or string-section accompaniments.

A laid-back atmosphere settled over the listeners, and many of us sat down in the dust and let our minds cool to the transportive melodies. This was just what I needed after another busy day in this extraordinary world.

The performance program continued through Sunday the 23rd July:

08:00 -10:00am    DJ Rockridge Constantine
10:00 - 11:00am   Al Hofmann Live
11:00 - 12:00am   DJ Cuga Rajal
12:00 - 01:00pm   Yman Juran: the ChangHigh Sisters Fireshow Performance
01:00 - 02:00pm   DJ Retune
02:00 - 03:00pm   Guitarhero Dougall Live
03:00 - 04:00pm    DRUM (Divine Rhythms Universal Music) Live

I'm especially excited to see that Yman Juran's group was performing. They are always a treat.

For the Octoburn, the theme that artists and builders are being invited to interpret is "Radical Ritual". Plots can be bought at kiosks on the playa and there's a 10% extra prim allowance for the early birds who bag theirs before the 31st of July. You don't have to be amazing to participate; it's all about Radical Inclusion.
