The Raglan Shire Tiny Poetry Slam

by Marcel Mosswood

Last week was my first time joining the Tiny Poetry Slam at the Raglan Shire. It was so much fun and cute! I can say it’s a poetry reading even where participant creates silly poetry and after the reading all who attend throw waffles, turkey, rubber ducks and toast to the participant as applause. In my opinion, Tiny Poetry Slam is a good way to be creative, silly, and fun! So, after it ended that day, I decided to interview Copper Mistral for SL Newser.

The Tiny Poetry Slam. This when I got rubber ducks and turkeys as applause after reading a poetry that I created

Marcel: Hi Copper, what makes you think that people in Second Life need such an event like The Tiny Poetry Slam?

Copper Mistral: All people have the ability to be creative in some way. Many people who can't paint or draw, or do hands-on art like knitting may feel, or even have been told that because they're not visually creative, they can't be creative at all.  But just about everyone can use words in some way. Other poetry slams I've attended in real life were often overly stuffy, and looked down on poets who just wanted to have fun and be silly with their words. Like the tinies of SL, Tiny Poetry Slam is all about having fun.

Marcel: Who are the avatars behind this event?

Copper Mistral: The hosts are Copper Mistral, Stereo Nacht, and Jillan McMillan. Raglan Shire Magistrate Zayn Till wanted to start a regular poetry event in Raglan and asked if I would be interested in hosting it. I had been attending the Wulfenbach poetry slam at the now-closed Mamma Gkika's and jumped at the opportunity to bring a poetry slam to Raglan. Stereo Nacht was asked to attend and give some guidance in getting things started. She fell for the tinies and joined our ranks, becoming ONE OF US!

Marcel: What a cool team! Is there an real life event that inspired you to create this event?

Copper Mistral: Not particularly, though it has been influenced by an real life slam I used to attend at the now-closed Zoomdweebie's Tea Bar in Wichita, Kansas, and that slam saw some of my tiny poetry performed for an RL audience.

Marcel: I see this event is held in the Raglan Shire, a community for tinies and Dinkies, is it open for biggies to participate?

Copper Mistral: Absolutely! We welcome everyone, all sizes, shapes, av's, as long as they behave themselves. While we throw applause, we do ask that people be respectful, not interrupt, and keep things family-friendly.

Marcel: Waffles, rubber ducks, popcorn, who has the idea of using those funny things? And why use them?

Copper Mistral: Thrown applause is one of the elements that came to us from the Wulfenbach Poetry Slam. Over there, books and bottles were frequently thrown around as applause. Being tinies, waffles are a natural choice for us, but we've used everything from waffles to anvils, rubber ducks to wrenches, as well as books, snowballs, paintings, and more! We do it because it's fun, it's funny, and it's something you just don't see that often. For those who prefer not to get pelted by everything from soup to nuts, we have a party cannon, which fires only balloons and confetti. All one has to do is ask that they not be buried by rubber ducks.

Marcel: Are the participants also poetry artists in real life? For example, a painting in SL was made by the artist in real life.

Copper Mistral: Some are, yes. All of our original poetry is written by someone, after all. Many of us would not consider ourselves "real" poets, but the words still come with feeling and meaning.  Some do write considerable poetry outside of SL. Others might not have written a poem since leaving school until they joined us at Tiny Poetry Slam and felt the urge to join in the fun.

Marcel: Can you tell me about the philosophy behind the rules on the board "Be creative, get inspired, ignore the roolz, add extra silly"? This is so interesting, while other community trying to keep the rules of poetry.

Copper Mistral: So much of real life is seriousness. We work, we have health problems, we take care of others. Second Life is a welcome escape, no matter how little time we can spend here.  Tinies are all about having fun and helping each other out. At Tiny Poetry Slam, we firmly believe that poetry should not be all super serious and stuff. Sure there's lots of fun, silly poetry out there, but it's usually "for kids." Why can't everyone else have fun, silly poetry? Enter the beloved Pawku. A form of poetry unique to Raglan Shire. A pawku is like a haiku but without all the rules. A typical pawku is three lines (more or less), may or may not rhyme, and has as many or as few sillybulls (syllables) as needed to make it work. They're almost always pure silliness, but occasionally have a touch of seriousness or a good dose of friendship and love. After all, tinies are a caring group, and our friends are very important to us.

Marcel: Thank you, Copper, very nice info here for avatar who like to join the Tiny Poetry Slam.

The Raglan Shire Tiny Poetry Slam is held every Monday at 6 PM SLT, here is the LM:

14th Raglan Shire Artwalk and Interview With Karmagirl Avro

by Marcel Mosswood

Raglan Shire Artwalk the 14th is being held at May 12 – June 16, 2019. This is an art exhibition involving several sims and includes the largest art exhibition on Second Life involving more than 175 artists. Yesterday, I went around all the sims all day at the Raglan Shire Artwalk accompanied by Karmagirl Avro (Karma Da Squabbit). She explained many things about the Artwalk.

The Raglan Shire Artwalk maps
“The first year we had two Artwalks, I think they were a three days event. Zayn Till, the Raglan Shire sims owner, saw a real-life art walk while living in Seattle, and wanted to bring that into Second Life,” she explained.

Karma said that the original intent of the Artwalk was a way for creative people to have a place to display their art. It was originally only for the community members but quickly spread to outside the tiny community. It is a free event, they've never charged rent for it, and this was the sim owners way of giving back as well as fostering creativity both in and out of the community.

The first year the Artwalk had two and it was a three days event. It is now a five-week long event. This one is the largest ever. Karma said that first few Artwalk had about 50 participants, and when she took over as director the Artwalk hit 100 that year. She set goals every year since and have hit them. It is over 180 participants this year, the biggest ever. 40% of the sculpture artists are first time participants to the Artwalk. 20% of the Artwalk participants are new. So even if you have been to every Artwalk you will see something new! “I am always excited to see both new and returning artists to the Artwalk,” said Karma.

One of the 2D art areas
The Raglan Shire Artwalk has had so many great works of arts from within and outside of the community, it's difficult to narrow it down to a few people. “But just off top of my head some very talented people: Silas Merlin, Panacea Pangaea, Maymay Maytov, Petunia Liveoak, Natalmari72, Reycharles, Skyblue Earthboy, Hadiya Draper, Denaliav, FionaFei, ViktorSavior, Layachi Ihnen,” said Karma.

One of the sculptures areas
When I asked her, “What do you think about art in Second Life? Is it have a good future?”

Karma answered, “I think art is evolving in Second Life with the advent of mesh. I remember how stunning it was to see mesh sculptures for the first time. There was one particular sculpture last year in Heron Shire that was so stunning I literally gasped when I saw it.”

“I was really excited last year that we had our first augmented reality art, which uses real-life sculptures and uploads them to a photo that can be scanned using an app to bring the sculptures to life! This display by Natalmari72 is back this year in Artwalk Area #4 in Raglan Shire. It's not to be missed!” said Karma while I watched the work of Magic Murti Lila on my Android phone.

Shady Fox's Memorial Events

By Bixyl Shuftan

On Sunday January 16, Shady Fox passed away from cancer. Shady had been a personality known in a number of places, notably the Giant Snail Races as part of the team and Raglan Shire as a DJ. He had been diagnosed with bladder cancer in early October, and his last Facebook post was a few weeks later. He departed with family by his side. The news of Shady's death was marked by sadness in Second Life, people spontaneously gathering at Raglan Shire to discuss their now late friend and to set up a makeshift memorial. Plans were soon made for a memorial service the next weekend, on Sunday January 24 at 12 PM SL time.

The first part of the events took place at Athen Shire. Arriving a few minutes before Noon, the place was packed. The messages were given out over Voice, so there was no chat to copy-paste. But there was a notecard available which had a few messages.

I'm trying my best, I told you that I always would.

I miss you.

I don't have your good advice, I have memories, and I'm trying to make them work.

I don't have my friend Shady. It's making me sick thinking about it.

I miss you.

Please be happy. I love you Shady

utterly Wizardly

I would count over 160 avatars in the two sims involved.

The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof.

Richard Bach

DrFran Babcock, who's been taking a hiatus from Second Life, took a brief break from her break to pay her respects.

With the large amount of avatars, some people would crash (including me once). The stream address was given out to help people save a little strain on their viewers.

I keep seeing Shady turn his back when, after Fox's memorial he says
"I don't think I can handle anymore losses. I think maybe it's time to
leave SL and Raglan. So many have gone." I beg him to stay. Tell him it's
not the empty chairs that are important. It's the memories we keep alive
of those who sat in them.
Then I begged him not to go. That I couldn't handle losing another friend.
Would I have said something different if I knew then what I know now?
I don't think so. Even though death isn't a tragedy to God, but a celebration,
for those left behind it hurts and we cry.
We know we will see him again. But, for most it will be a long time.
So, we cry.
We have the best chance of knowing he is with us here in Second Life.
Where he is going is also a virtual Life. I can't imagine him not
sneaking in here to see how we are doing. To listen to us carol at Wootmas.
To listen to us talk about about the funny things he did when we were down.
To be the Biggie Fox in Tiny Land, with the biggest tiny heart of all.
Wootmas will never be the same for those of us here then. It will be
more special, because it is when Shady went Home.

With the lag from all those avatars, most cut back on the number of attatchments they had. Though someone had a breedable pet they named after Shady as their own little memorial to him.

I never knew Shady as long as many, but he always made me feel safe and secure and like i was not intruding, which i feel like i often am(even when im not).

He would come sit and play the frog song while he did stuff. and you were always welcome to come sit and do nothing on his lands and in da cube.

it might not sound like much but to me it meant alot. He gave alot without making much of a deal about, sort of by just being around. you felt in a good place when he was around.

i cant express well my thoughts into words here, but Shady will always be important to me.

Eventually, the first part of the service was done, and people began to leave to another part of the Shire.

Who can fill the sandbox
make it sound real cool
make the joy jump out your legs
down at the swimmin ool

The Shady Fox can

Who can take a sad face
lookin like a clown
put his arm around you
and turn it upside down

The Shady Fox can

Who can fill your heart up
Although he's gone today
because he is a part of you
that never goes away

The Shady Fox can.

The Shady fox can
cus you have to look
no further than inside of you.

Always within me Russ, you inspire and watch my days.
I hope that people see you shining out of all of us.

-Talisman Takaaki
"Squirrel"

The ceremony continued at Heron Shire.

Yes within our hearts
we shall remember as
we hold on to you

Yes within our hearts
so special so dear a
void that will be there
but filled with memories

Yes within our hearts
you shall remain
always loved always there
So look deep within

Because of the huge number of avatars, some watched the ceremony from the shore at Morning Shire.

I come here not to mourn
your death but to
celebrate your
life

You take with you on
your journey a part
of each and everyone of
us

In return we keep a
part of you within our
Hearts

Luskwood founders Liam Roark, Eltee Statosky, and Michi Lumin were among those there.

During this part of the service, Raglan Shire's estate owner, Zayn Till, officially dedicated Shady Fox's permanent memorial: an ever-burning purple flame.

At one point, those attending were asked to rezz a purple or black balloon on the ground, and touch it to set it floating in the air.

With the second part of the service over, it was time for the memorial concert. So we went to a platform 3000 meters in the air, presumably where Shady previously performed.

"Last train to Awesome Town" prim words above the stage would say.

Shady was known as the "Baconator," sometimes sporting a shirt "Bacon makes everything better." And in one corner, there was a pile of the "meat candy" that would send any lover of the food into bliss.

In the back of the stage, a line of "Cybermen," a race of Borg-like aliens from "Dr. Who."

As the first performers warmed up, the crowd gathered.

Keeba Tammas and her band of tinies would be the first to perform, starting off at 2PM SL time.

The audience was a mass of tiny, furred, normal  human, feral, and other avatars.

At one point, one of the band was being a prankster, releasing a bunch of banana peel articles.

It took two tinies to handle the band's huge base violin, but four hands could do things just two couldn't.

The last song Keeba and her band would play was "That's What Friends Are For."

Keep smiling and keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
In good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for

It was probably best that Keeba chose this song to be last as some of the audience started getting sad with some crying. Keeba and the band then stepped down from their poses and invited people to come on stage for a kind of group hug, she and the band still singing.

Other musicians who would perform as the day went on were Songbird Sorbet at 4PM, Shakespeare Shamrock at 5 PM, Shmoo Snook at 6PM, Shandy Stradling at 7PM, Caleb Kit at 8PM, and Copper Mistral at 9PM.

Not far away from Shady's permanent memorial was another memorial. In previous years at Raglan, ten people considered to be part of the community had passed away. With Shady Fox, the total now is eleven. Four others had gone missing, with attempts to find out what happened revealing nothing.

And so, Raglan Shire and other friends of Shady Fox had their event in his honor. For more pictures, check out those by Wildstar Beaumont and Teal Freenote. One can also visit the memorial at Heron Shire (254, 82, 20).

Giant Snail Race at Raglan Shire

By Bixyl Shuftan

On Saturday May 31, Raglan Shire was the scene of the month's cross-country Giant Snail Race. The Giant Snail Races are organized by RacerX Gullwing and his team. The races take place very Saturday, usually on RacerX's obstacle course in Devon Dream. But during the Relay for Life fundraising season, they hold a cross-country race on the last Saturday of Relay months. In the past, these races to raise funds for charity were held on the mainland. But starting this year, RacerX began offering a charity auction with the location of the next race as the prize. And Raglan won the chance to be the location for May's race.

Normally the snails in cross-country races are in two groups. Those paying a 2500 Linden entry fee start right on the starting line, with those paying a 500 L one starting a little further back. This time, there was an additional starting place further back, with an entry fee of  just 100L.

Across the tiny community, the giant snails made their way across streets, trails, ramps, streams, and walkways. The use of "teleport logs" made things a bit confusing as the snails tried to follow the course, some locals commenting "looks like now they're not sure what is going on." "I hadda idee dis wuz gonna be barely controlled chaos." "Thats nuffin' new in Raglan. Hehehe." But despite that and the lag, a good time was had by all.

The locals sat in various locations to watch the race. Some were showing their humor, such as this kitty looking like a patron at a French restaurant, which if you're a snail is the last place you want to be.

Raglan's tinies already have a reputation for having plenty of chaotic fun. The addition of giant snails just added to it. "We got runned ober!" "I BEEN SLIMED!!" "Ewwwww, tentacles touching me!!" "Told ya things could get crazy."

And at the end, there was the usual celebration and dance, with everyone who made their way to the finish line getting a trophy.

The unofficial list was as follows (RacerX accidentally crossed the line at 10):

 Lominola Rehula 1
 Lulee Babenco 2
 Bree Himmel 3
 Tapple Gao 4
 Vanessamendonca Resident 5
 Tindallia Soothsayer 6
 Alden Cortes 7
 Shady Fox 8
 Loopy String 9
 Temba Resident 11
 Fullauto Vandyke 12
 Cinders Vale 13

 Seth Stratten 21
 Safra Nitely 22
