Various Second Life Happenings In October

By Gemma Cleanslate

I have had several very busy weeks in sl. As a Ranger at the Burn2 event most of my time was spent on the playa helping. There was one final celebration that included anyone connected to the event in any way, Leads, artists, Dj’s, Rangers, Greeters, and visitors. It was great fun!

One more event will take place and that is the Skin Burn. It will take place on October 29 at 12 and 6. “What is Skin Burn? The BURN2 Skin Burn is a decompression event that features an “encore” Man Burn, usually 1-2 weeks after the closing of the annual BURN2 event held in late October. We Burn the Man again, with everyone in their best low-lag form. We are challenged to get wildly creative with it, too!” More information will be sent before the day.

I managed to get away to attend the installation ceremony and ball for the newly appointed Ambassador for the Jeogeot Continent. Everyone in attendance sat on bleachers outside the Embassy to witness Abnor Mole hand over the key to Bel ,,,, Bel addressed the audience saying,

"Almost 3 years ago I found the BBB and with it came Boo, Sun, North, and then me. Boo setting up office in a houseboat.

Then it was Fi’s house and from there to a cabin and then to a stilts home. Then to where it is now. Lots of moving and lots of memories.I am more than a little bit excited at being given the opportunity to be a member of the BBB again...good old memories!I want to thank Everyone for allowing me to return as the Ambassador of Jeogeot. Lots of new faces and identities for me to get to know As Ambassador of Jeogeot I want to integrate the things that Jeogeot has to offer and is known for. And to integrate the things that Bellisseria has to offer to all of Second Life. I shall continually update new adventures and areas of interest, while bringing to Jeogeot the larger-than-life areas of interest of the rest of Second Life"

Everyone offered congratulations to Bel and we then adjourned to the party area that was set up next to the Embassy property and had a wonderful time dancing and chatting. The BBB (Bellisseria Bureau of Bureaucracy) is the sponsor of all the embassies and ambassadors across the continents of SL.

I did get to two pre-Halloween parties in Bellisseria also after the Burn2 closed. DJ Bela hosted one and DJ Far hosted another. My next project is to get to see some of the spooky places set up before Halloween is over.

Our dear Hammies have set up a wonderful Hammieween at the Bellisseria Fairgrounds. Stop over to check it out and see if you can attend a party there too! There are games and a hunt going on.

SL19B Opening Ceremonies Hit By Technical Difficulties

By Bixyl Shuftan,

Not even the mighty Lindens are immune to crashing.

Thursday June 16 was the start of the Second Life Nineteenth Birthday, of SL19B. Yours truly dropped by early at the Arboretum, where Patch Linden was due for the opening speech. There were others whom had the same idea, and we were entertained by Squeaky Mole dancing and doing a few antics on stage. Three of the four sims in the area were quickly filling up. They must have been the high-capacity sims the Lindens were talking about as soon two were at 130 residents each while the third had over a hundred, for over 360 residents.

I hoped they could keep these once-impossible numbers up, wondering if there'd soon be a crash. And it turned out I wondered correct once more. I had Strawberry Linden's Youtube going, and she crashed as well.

Logging back on, I found myself in Horizons. I tried to TP back to the Aboretum, but couldn't. I went to a nearby sim and tried to walk over, only to find the sims were considered full, even though they had about 80 each instead of 130. It seems something happened with the sim, and they cut it's capacity. So I would listen to Patch's speech through the Youtube stream. Due to other technical issues, it would be delayed past the planned time of 12 Noon as well (21:50 in the Youtube).

(Click here if the video does not play)

Patch, whom appeared clouded throughout Strawberry's stream, would talk about various things. This included inspiring others to make their own virtual worlds, or as he put it, "some new legless entrants more recently to the fold." He would mention accomplishments of Second Life, saying the virtual world had a gross domestic product of over $650 billion USD. Patch would also discuss the various places of the Second Life Birthday area, such as the community gallery, where he invited people to share their screenshots, which he called allowing others a glimpse in the virtual lives of the residents, such as times when two friends are having a cup of coffee. Then he made a reference to his Fantasy Faire Jail and Bail, "then there are completely insane moments where a horde of angry tinies throws you into a jail and pokes you with pointy sticks. I may or may not be familiar with that." His aim was for the gallery to be a mix of "The beautiful, the crazy, and the poignant moments."

He also talked about a few changes at the SLB, such as moving the gifts to the Tapestry of Time, and the Music Fest events would be speak over the three stages over the three days, one day for each. He also talked about the three stages, the Arboretum, the Steamworks, and the Vernian Rotunda. Over the course of 11 days, there will be over 350 performers.

He then brought up the exhibits, "There is nothing that better showcases the imagination and abilities of our community than the exhibit regions." Then came the Shop and Hop, "With over 400 merchants, this is the largest shopping event we have ever hosted ... a must-visit for both the sales and the mountain of gifts that are available to the ardent shopper."

He would then go on to describe the accomplishments in the virtual world such as "leveraging our newly-found Cloud environment muscles with the debut of event regions, which you're currently sitting in. It's a lot of people here. In fact, over 350 of us at one point, something we wouldn't have been able to have done without all of the various improvements to performance our engineering teams have been so hardworking on."

Patch stated there would be more Linden Home themes to come, but did not mention the next one. "I don't want to give anything away just yet," he would say, "Next week, please come and see 'Meet the Lindens,'" saying he would be at the first, "I have many great things I have yet to announce."

"I continue to commit to all of you that I will carry forward our mission of making Second Life the biggest, best, and most vibrant virtual world there can ever be. Oh, and we will always have legs."  He then thanked the moles, who he described as having been planning the event for months, in addition to certain residents who contributed, and invited people to take a slice of provided cake (the resident-run SLB events were noted for their "Cake Stage" locations), "have fun and stay virtual."

Strawberry would apologize for her viewer not being able to rezz Patch, and would look around a few more places before ending the stream.

Patch will appear again at the SL19B for "Meet the Lindens," once again at the Arboretum, today, Monday June 20 at 2PM SL time: SLB Exhilarate (228/224/23) *

The Heterocera Embassy Opening, And A Glance At The SLEA

By Gemma Cleanslate

My busy week getting back to business and fun was a mixture of events I could get to. Eduardo Minghuang dj and owner of Cuban Cafe has post blockade Cuba featuring “Latin tunes & dances: BALLROOM SAMBA SALSA MAMBO MERENGUE FLAMENCO LAMBADA BACHATA KIZOMBA RUMBA TANGO! Also beaches, Cuban coffeehouse & Revolution Museum.”
The venue is open on Mondays Tuesdays and Thursdays.. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Friskies/19/240/22

Romie Vella invited me to this event and I am glad I got there. The visitors were both Spanish and English and all had a great time listening and dancing to the tunes.

I went over to SLEA for the first time in a long time. I received a notice that the Art Walk had new artists exhibiting there . Most of the artists were new to me and so interesting. It is a very eclectic grouping and each installation is one that takes some meditation to explore the theme.

I was taken with Bryn Oh’s exhibit. It is so different from her usual story lines. I walked into her garden of flowers and was immediately surrounded by giggles! It was so pleasant to walk through I had to do it several times enjoying the laughs of the flowers I touched as I walked. She was the only artists I was really familiar with .

Another build that was fun to walk on was the particle show. By walking on tiny islands set in a pond I was able to activate particles nearby. The artist ,Tyrehl Byk, calls it The Ego’s Many eyes. Have some fun there. There are other installations to explore and enjoy. I will let you have the pleasure of understanding the artists and their work. Just walk along the path , barefoot if you like as Tansee suggests . It is a circle that takes you by each exhibit . In front of each you can pick up a notecard that tells you the background and experience of each artist in real life and SL. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SLEA7/128/67/23

Saturday there was installation of a new Ambassador for the continent of Heterocera. Daria Raynier received her key from Suη (Dark Sunflower), a BBB official, since Abnor was was not able to attend.

Yuriko Kimura (Rydia Lacombe) Hiraya mayor greeted the audience and Dariah as the new Ambassador and wished her well in her new position. There were several other Ambassadors attending.

Dariah graciously thanked her and made a short and sweet speech , “Last Saturday I celebrated my 13th rezday. Now I am pleased and have the honor to contribute to our communities. Now in a new position as ambassador I did a lot of travel things in the past. And I am happy to do new things for Heterocera and Bellisseria now.Thank you all for coming. We will no go to the music and fun part of the day …”

And the party began with music by Mandy Dorfler ,known from the grid-wide famous Harlow's Women Club. That was the end of my week.

The embassy is at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Tersa/180/116/92

Bellisseria Rings In The New Year, Two Mainland Embassies

 *
By Gemma Cleanslate

I spent the last night of the old year end party at the Fairgrounds on Bellisseria. This is the beginning of a tradition I think.

Bela Tolsen hosted and dj’ed at “ Réveillon is the Brazilian NYE party traditionally celebrate by the sea shore, wearing white (meaning peace) and making wishes to Yemanjá (a powerful sea goddess from the Brazilian African-based religion known as Umbanda or Candomblé),” she told us.

The venue was a sea of white while everyone danced to the beat of the music. There was champagne and fireworks and it was a marvelous end to the year we would like to forget.

I missed the opening of the third Embassy which took place on December 22 on the continent of Nautilus where Abnor Mole handed the key over to Freddie Harrington, the new ambassador there. I have to talk to Freddie when I get the chance to hear what he has in mind for sharing Nautilus. As usual following the ceremony a formal party took place. I was dressed in festive red and left my avatar there earlier so I could be on time but real life took over and I did not make it back.

I took a tour when I did get there and a picture of Freddie in his office. Stop over to see it on a hill above Route 12.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Flagg/202/189/41

I did make it to the Grand Opening of the Embassy on Gaeta which took place January 5th. It was an elegant affair with Abnor Mole handing over the key to Fiona Jogiches, Ambassador. I stepped into the Embassy after to see the décor. Most of the Embassies are similar in style with local maps and information for visitors on the walls. The offices of the ambassadors have touches of the individual ambassadors.

On my way to the party in a building at the rear the Embassy I had my first look at the classy black embassy car parked there.

The party was fun as usual as the attendees celebrated the day. I asked Fiona why she became ambassador and her answer was, “I became an Ambassador after being inspired by others. I've spent a lot of time living on mainland long before Bellisseria was even a twinkle in Patch's eyes, and whilst I love Bellisseria, mainland offers something special too. “

She has plans to have tours of the continent and is becoming more familiar with the many special places and activities now.

This embassy is located on Route 7. There are three more Embassies to have Ambassadors on the Mainland and all should be having openings by the end of February if all goes well. To make a visit to the Gaeta Embassy take http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife//20/85/36 .

CDS and Sunweaver Communities At the MoCA Fimi Exhibit Opening

By Bixyl Shuftan

On Sunday May 2, two communities took part in an event for three artists, notably one whom had been part of one and had fans in the other. This was Artistic Fimicloud. Known as Stephanie Koslow in real life, she passed away thirteen years ago this month from cancer. So while the event was also for the other two artists whom had pictures at the exhibit, Sanjeewa Kumara and Sujeewa Kumari from Sir Lanka, it was a chance for people to look back at memories of the little pink fox whom had made her mark through artwork and her efforts at the Relay.

The event started at Noon SL time at the CDS' Museum of Contemporary Art (also known as MoCA) in the Neufreistadt sim. Fimi's art, retrospective paintings, was on the ground floor. Kumara and Kumari's art was on the second floor (European first floor), provided by Asmita Duranjay. Sunweaver Shockwave Yareach was the DJ for the event. He took no tips for playing music. Instead a RFL kiosk was set up for the Sunbeamer team, the Relay team of the Sunweaver community. "We are supporting the Sunbeamer team for Relay for Life of Second Life," the current CDS Chancellor Kyoko Furse-Barzane (Samara Barzane) explained, "So love MoCA and CDS too, but hit that kiosk hard." One guy whose viewer was taking a while commented, "Well, currently I just see "Paintings from the Grey Period" until the textures will be loaded, then chuckled. Kyoko mused, "Ah yes, the specialty of many museums.

There were a number of Sunweaver and CDS noteables. Besides Kyoko, other locals included (but not limited to) Lilith Ivory, Callipygian Christensen, and Rosie Gray. Rosie was in a tiny raccoon-like avatar, commenting with a grin, "so glad everyone wears nametags in SL." "Rosie, you are adorable," Kyoko woud later say with a smile. Besides the journalist, other Sunnies there were Jenni Greenfield, Dusk Griswold, Cynthia Farshore, and Sunweaver chief and team Sunbeamer captain Rita Mariner. Dusk was in the poodle avatar she wears most of the time these days. She would comment, "I was trying to figure out why a poodle seemed to fit me, then my real-life sister gave me a possible answer. I lost my Mom to cancer when I was 12, so a lot I didn't remember about her. My sister told me her nickname was 'Poodle.'"

Kyoko would say, "I meet Fimi when I started exhibiting at her Park Galleries. After we lost her in May 2008, I took over Park Galleries and ran it until December 2011. Fimi was very special to a lot of us, the cutest, feistiest little pink fox, and I miss her terribly still." Rita would say, "We still relay in her memory. We have a pink fox statue we put out in our Campsite every year, just for her." "The (Redheads) hadn't been a group long when we lost her," Shockwave commented. Kyoko went on, "We were all on the Passionate Redheads in 2008 and 2009. ... We were the first furry/human Relay team. "Freaked people out I think," Shockwaved mused. It was brought up that around 2009 a number of people in the team split away to form their own, Inspired Dreamwalkers, and the Passionate Redheads were mostly people from the Sunweaver community until it's closing in 2013 just before the season started. "I was a Passionate Redhead till the bitter end and it was disbanded," Rita stated.

Shockwave would play songs such as "Mad World" by Tears for Fears, "I Will Remember You," by Asia, "Love Will Find A Way" by Yes, "Fly Like An Eagle," by Steve Miller, and "Learning to Fly" by Tom Petty. "I can't help it," he would say of the last one, "I love Tom Petty. (I) wanted to see him in concert, but wasn't able to swing the cost of tickets.  Two weeks later, he was dead. Was my hint to QUIT (my) job -- no future in it." Dusk commented she would be retiring from hers in several more months. Rita added, "Bunny has been retired for 12 years plus, Love it." Shockwave would later play what Rita called, "one of the funniest songs I ever heard," which was "Viagra in the Water." "Listen to (the) words," Shockwave told everyone, "it's hilarious. I'll bet Fimi would have loved it." "Hungry like the Wolf" by Duran Duran, got a few jokes about "sheepishly made videos" and "not what I expected when they said the film was catered." "You don't need them the way you wolf it down."

At another point, Rosie in her little tiny was wearing a tall hat that changed colors. "Rosie, you are glowing," Kyoko laughed. "It's the only sombrero I have," Rosie responded, "it's a good party hat, especially if you're really small." There was a joke about hat tricks, to which Dusk commented, "Rabbits are good at hat tricks."

There was some talk about movies as well, notably "The Dark Crystal." "I was really disappointed in it," Dusk commented, "I am a big Jim Henson fan. I got into puppetry because of Henson. But sorry, Dark Crystal was bad." Shockwave nodded, "It was difficult to follow.  That's the directors fault." "It is because of how it was made," the puppeteer commented, "He approached it backwards. He created the world and characters first, then made a story to fit them." She did say there was nothing wrong with how the puppetry and props looked, "looks good visually." Cynthia would say, "have to remember it was long before CGI and to get the puppets to act so well was craft."

The talk about puppets went on, Shockwave saying with a smile, "I played with puppetry because of Dusk here. Those were fun years." "Yeah, we had some fun performing at cons," Dusk responded. Rita added, "I got a puppet caused it looked fun at the cons." "Dusk is a wonderful puppeteer," Kyoko commented, "I saw her give a class, learned a lot." Rita added, "Dusk and I were even on the Dave Glover show a couple times, with our puppets." Shockwave had one story, "At the second TFF (Texas Furry Fiesta), a daddy with his cheerleader daughter was having conniptions that all the weirdos were sharing his hotel. I asked him what was wrong, automatically using the puppet. And to my surprise, the man was arguing with the puppet!!" Several people laughed, Shockwave commenting with a grin, "That was when I knew I wasn't bad at it." Cynthia remarked, "Sort of talk to the hand , with a cover over it." Shockwave chuckled, "I wish I had thought ot that then, that would be a good ending. My closing line was 'We may be wierd, but you 're the one fighting with a puppet.'" Kyoko had a good laugh, "Nice one Shocky."

Shockwave had another story, "We had a teams meeting.  And one of my group was on the island, from home. The joke was made, 'Is the SS Minnow fixed yet?' Everyone laughed but one guy. He said he was googleing what the SS minnow was. I NOW feel old." we all chuckled, Kyoko commenting, "I remember before dial phones."

Talk turned back to Fimi and two of her friends, Rita saying, "She was very close to Treminari," a female red Lusk fox whom was part of the Sunweavers until around 2010. Shockwave commented, "Don't know what happened to her. I know there was a falling out, yes. Well, I wish her the best wherever she is." I myself would say, "Tremi never forgot Fimi, saying she had with her some of her best times in Second Life." Rita would add, "Still hoping Lommy finds his way back," referring to Lomgren Smalls who was known for his six-inch tall avatar. Shockwave would say, "In Lom's case, I didn't KNOW he was sick. ... Lom I sense now and then here and there." Kyoko mused, "Check Rita's cleavage."

Eventually, things were getting close to the end. Rita invited, "You know Kyoko, you are still more than welcome to come visit us." Kyoko responded, "I will. I had forgotten how much fun you all are. The younger furs, too yiffy for me. But you guys and my vintage, and really intelligent." Rita offered to show off the demolition derby the Sunbeamer team made part of an event a few weeks ago, "I figure we will use it again later this month." Shockwave, whom made the derby with Cynthia, mused, "All those years of chasing cars." Dusk commented, "A poodle proved to be the most destructive." Cyanthia joked, "that kind of driving just seems to come natural to you." "I have driven a mail truck for 33 years," Dusk joked, "what do you expect?" Kyoko suggested, "Should I introduce Shocky to my exploding sheep?" Rita joked, "You know the sound a sheep makes when it explodes? 'Hiss BOOM  Baaaaaaa!'" Kyoko chuckled, "Good one Rita." Dusk changed to her sheep avatar, "see if I explode."

Finally came the last song of the event, "Together in Electric Dreams" by the Human League. Kyoko told everyone, "This exhibit will be up into June. So please bring friends over." She also invited the Sunweavers to explore the sims, "By the way, we will have a quad horse in our Representative Assembly next term." Cyanthia mused, "Well guess better than an ass at the Representative Assembly." Dusk joined in, "Horses always depress me, all those long faces."

The Relay kiosk took in 5000 Lindens for Team Sunbeamers.

With the end of the event, people began going their separate ways, some after looking one more time at the paintings, and one quote of Fimi's.

"My art, my life, is about looking forward, never looking back. Looking back serves no purpose but to break one's heart when you're walking a path as difficult as some of us do. So instead, I look forward, to that next beautiful sunset on the river."

SL16B Opening Speech

Although the Second Life Sixteenth Birthday started June 20, it was on the 21st that the opening speech was given. On that day, residents were told it would be at the Festival Stage, which was filling the role held by the "Cake Stage" of the resident-run SLB events.

Like "The Cake," the Festival Stage covered the meeting corners of four sims, SL16B Exhilarate, Fascinate, Magnificent, and Mesmerize. This allows a large number of residents to be at an event at once.

The one problem, it can take a while, and processing power, to rezz all those avatars.

Squeaky Mole told everyone, "Voice is enabled for the speech, but we would like to ask you  to not speak as residents. This is for Patch Linden only! We'll also type the speech for those without voice enabled. Thank you! (If possible, during the speech please do not spam the chat so everyone can read on their own speed). ... Please do not request Linden Bears until after the speech!" Squeaky would also text Patch Linden's speech to the crowd.

"Welcome to all who have come! Thank you for being with us today to celebrate Second Life turning 16! I’d like to start out with taking an opportunity to thank some people. First, Ebbe Linden, Linden Lab’s CEO.  Ebbe has blessed me with the opportunity to be here with all of you today, and empowered me to do what I am for all of you.  I will be forever grateful for everything you have enabled for me Ebbe, for Second Life and Linden Lab. All of these people came together to make this entire event, these regions and all of the support with the coordination of the events to ensure it will run smoothly: Our Resident volunteer staff: Leondra, Cordie, Golan, Pygar, Dawny, Chloe, Jackstir and the rest of the stage crew, greeters and other volunteers. Our Moles: Squeaky, Ancient & Magic, Abnor, Naughty, Silent, Mischievious, Alotta, plus others who were involved with creating the content you are surrounded with in these regions. Other Lindens for their involvement and support:  Derrick, Xiola, Brett, Constantine, Strawberry, Kristin, Tommy plus many more who were behind the scenes supporting our efforts..And our many Resident content contributors, exhibitors, and performers, who will put their talents on display throughout the event and our various streaming services partners.

"For sixteen years, we have been able to experience a vast array of people, communities, lifestyles, and places all connected in a meaningful and immersive environment.  Second Life has brought all of us an entire world of diversity and openness, which in any other environment could continue to be challenging to discover, whether that be in real life, elsewhere, or even on other platforms. We continue to witness Second Life enable people from all corners of the globe to create, socialize, experiment, develop relations, engage in education, or business and even perhaps find the love of their life.  Sometimes those may follow through into the real world with opportunities as it has for me…. in both the professional sense and the personal sense such as with my loving husband who is also here with us today.

"As Second Life continues to demonstrate what it has over the past 16 years, that you can find almost every interest you might have, presented in various and unique ways.... we are committed to helping and allowing everyone continue to explore, create, and socialize for many years to come. Let us all take the time to go and explore the regions that the entire community has worked on for this very special event. We hope all of you enjoy the festivities and we look forward to another great year! Without further delay…  Join us 10am SLT as we listen to incredible music by Parker Static.

"Happy 16th Birthday Second Life!!"

There would be a video available of the speech, but unedited footage. The speech itself was about from 5:15 to 8:55 in the video.

The crowd listened, then applauded once it was over.

Among the Lindens there was Strawberry, whom had been known as Strawberry Singh until hired in April by the Lab.

It wasn't long at all before some began asking for Linden bears.

But besides passing them out, they also started riding copies of one particular devilish-looking bear.

Kona Linden looked rather serious as his peers were funning around behind him.

At 10AM, Parker Static, the first of the Music Faire musicians, began singing.

Which resulted in Lindens and Residents dancing away.

As the day went on, there would be more singers at the Festival Stage. And this would be just the first day out of two for it. And there will be more events to come at the SL16B.
