Virtual World Best Practices in Education 2025 Conference

By Dancerina Starlight

It is the last month of the first quarter of 2025, and it is time for Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education (VWBPE). The VWBPE is a global grassroots community event, which focuses on education in immersive virtual environments. Organized by the Second Life community, the conference is designed to provide space to showcase immersive learning in virtual worlds.

This year's theme proves to lend to some really interesting topics over the three-day conference. The conference will occur from Thursday, April 3 to Saturday, April 5. However, there will be a kick-off party for all volunteers on Tuesday, April 1 at 4:00 PM SLT. All are welcome to join and have a great time.

Where will the Conference Take Place?

All sessions of the VWBPE 2025 Conference are held in Second Life®. A few exceptions are the Immersive Experiences that occur before and after the conference, which may be in SL or other online venues. All times are in SLT (US Pacific Daylight Time).

You may access this time zone converter for your local time: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html.

How Do I Get to the Session?

To teleport to a session, open an individual event on the calendar from any calendar view. A window will open and you will either see SLURL links in the text or a text link at right that says “Go to event website” – clicking either link will take you to a separate tab or window with the familiar SL map. You can then either copy the URL at the top of that page, or right-click the “visit this location” button and copy that link address, then paste in the location box at the top of your viewer window and press “enter”.

Teleport boards will also be available in convenient locations around the regions for your use as well.

Can I Add Sessions to My Own Calendar?

Yes! You can add these events to your personal calendar! You don’t have to miss any sessions of the conference!
• To add all VWBPE conference events to your calendar, find the “Add to Calendar” button and click on it. You will find options to add to your Google, Outlook or Apple calendar.
• To add individual sessions, click the event and find the “Subscribe” button on that page.

Daylight Saving Time

In most of the United States and Canada, Daylight Saving Time is in effect as of 08 March 2025. Is your location affected? Check this page to find out when (and if) Daylight Saving Time begins for you. The Spring/Fall time change occurs throughout March and April, if at all, depending upon your location.

The Posters, Exhibits and the Rock and Bone Mysteries conference game will all open at 9:00am SLT on Thursday, 03 April 2025.

VWBPE - Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable

By Bixyl Shuftan

Like many, I missed most of the events during the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education. But I did get a chance to catch one of the afterevents. On Thursday March 21

Starting in FIVE MINUTES - VWER Visits VWBPE - Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable in collaboration with the Virtual Worlds Education Consortium - Highlights of Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education conference and exhibit visit - in text chat at Infolit iSchool (230,25,21)

I dropped by a few minutes into the event. I'd run into a few of the people before, such as Stranger Nightfire and Beth Ghostraven. Beth commented, "I haven't had time to explore any of the exhibits yet except mine, so I'm looking forward to seeing some of them." They talked a little about the conference first, such as the session, "Enhancing Criminal Law Education Through Machinima."

We soon headed to VWBPE Rainbow Basin. Sheila Yoshikawa commented, "So the idea is that you can take the pathways through the mysterious rain forest to find the origins of VWER."

Sheila Yoshikawa commented, "So the idea is that you can take the pathways through the mysterious rain forest to find the origins of VWER." There was talk about AJ Kelton, and how he was recovering from surgery, "AJ Kelton was very active in the earlier days of SL ... it would be great if he returns."

"There is also a statue in the 2nd room of the treehouse. You can drop a notecard in it with your VWER story."

Next, we headed to VWBPE Canopy Point.

Beth would say, "The exhibit is basically the same as last year, but the outfits are all new.  I think Dinkies must ahve been here last, all the Dinkies outfits were showing, (laughter)" She would say the cabin was a freebie on Marketplace by Jadyn Firehawk.

We would check out a nearby treehouse.

Shelia commented, "Perhaps we can finish with  Mythic Origins of the University  New Mexico." We then headed to the final exhibit of the day, at VWBPE Desert Hinterlands.

There were a number of exhibits, Shelia commenting, "I hadn't looked round this properly but there seemed a lot of detail."

Beth laughed at one, "Coyote is squirrely? Ell Oh Ell!"

Shelia would go on to say, "There weren't a huge number of exhibits this year, but interesting variety. ... I liked a feature in the Wholebrain Health one, where you clicked an item and it showered you with compliments.... it was surprisingly cheering."

Shelia would comment, "The sword on my back came from this exhibit VWBPE Tundra Expanse (213,71,27)" I responded, "Let me guess Shelia, while the pen may be mightier than the sword, sometimes it's handy to have both?" The result was some chuckles.

The meeting then wound down, and we went our seperate ways. I looked around a little before moving on.

The VWBPE 2022

By Gemma Cleanslate

One of the most prestigious international events of the year will open March 31. The Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Event will take place with a jam packed program with events for everyone interested in any way with education. Phoenix Rising is the theme this year. To learn more about the event, presenters and participants visit the website that will answer so many questions. https://www.vwbpe.org/

“The 15th annual Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference will be an online distributed conference happening in multiple virtual spaces. This conference focuses on the use of immersive virtual environments for educational purposes including virtual and augmented reality.

To the best ability possible, VWBPE provides educational and networking opportunities that are relevant to educational curriculum development utilizing virtual environments and “best practices”. These include

    helping to build community through extension of learning best practices to practical application of those ideas and techniques;
providing networking opportunities for educators and the communities that help support education; and
providing access to current innovations, trends, ideas, case studies, and other best practices for educators and the communities that help support education”

I have been hosting at the Gateway, Lecture Halls, Classrooms, Auditorium and other venues through out the extensive regions. This is the fifteenth year of presentations in SL. There is so much to see and absorb during the three days . I am glad it will probably remain open for visitors several days following the close.

Two keynotes are on the program which you can see on the program. Three guests will also address the conference. Workshops will be taking place all over. Fortunately there is a great hud to help you get around as well as many hosts to answer questions and help those not quite familiar with second life.Do not miss a visit to “Lest We Forget” area. Remembrance candles are set out for those who were part of the event in the past and have departed. There is a memorial this year for Ebbe Linden who was one of the guests last year. At the Gateway find the Swag Bag and get lots of information and the hud.

The social aspect is not ignored so there will be parties at the social area often. When one arrives at the entrance to the social area take a left and there is a room filled with free goodies to grab, clothing hats, boots, tee shirts and more. some cute slippers help after being on your feet. I am sure I will be wearing them for the dancing. Proceed to the dance floor where there will be lots of fun with good entertainment.

A hunt is going on during the days for Phoenix eggs. The eggs can be traded in as payment for goodies. You need a special hud for this so remember to go grab one. Check out the directions and go get those eggs! http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/VWBPE%20Social%20Lyra/65/224/1717

Sponsors for the event are visible on blocks set a various sites and thanks to Linden Lab for being a Gold Sponsor. They are all listed on the website too. I am looking forward to the whole event . Say hi if you see me at work wearing the title VWBPE Host. Here is the Gateway, the best place to begin your visit and get that Swag.

Many education groups or related to education in Second Life have their own little islands in the sky where some will be hosting events there too but go visit the sites and get information on all each has to offer. Marcel Mosswood, one of our own SL Newser reporters has two such sites to visit. The hud will help you get to each site or ask for assistance. One can also fly or TP from one to another as you see them in the sky. The exhibits are listed separately on the hud.

Here is the entrance to the Gateway! http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/VWBPE%20Gateway%20Pyxis/100/128/24

The WVBPE Conference

By Gemma Cleanslate

“Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education is a meaningful way for presenters to share their research and experience about the rich learning systems in virtual worlds and games. This free online conference is produced entirely by volunteers. Conference proceedings are published as the Journal of Virtual Studies by Rockcliffe University Consortium.”

This is part of the mission statement of the VWBPE on the website. To learn about this conference go to the website  https://www.vwbpe.org/mission . The program, key speakers, events are listed there. The press release said it all. That is the Gateway to it all above.

I love this conference because it has far reaching effects to many who are interested in the use of virtual worlds for education. It certainly takes on more meaning in this day and age of using the internet for learning from preschool to adulthood. There are various complaints about video games but many contribute to following directions, decision making,  focus and other skills that aid in learning. I have been a greeter-host at the event for four years. I  love getting into the builds, the displays, attending some of the programs, social events and helping presenters, visitors and newcomers to second life orient to the many venues suspended in the installations. Each sponsor and displayer has their own little island in the sky to visit. You will find space freebies at the .... and in many exhibits and a hunt .

Last year the installation took on space to arrange the many venues up and down in the air. I was happy to see that they kept thee same locals this year and will keep it next year too I hear. It is too good to put in archives. The teleport hud, centers, and landmarks work so well to aid attendees and visitors.

Just to roam the many exhibits and pick up information is so  amazing. Attending the lectures gives one a perspective on worldwide education. The social gatherings are great fun with good music and camaraderie at the Social Spaceport. You will find space freebies here , and gifts in many exhibits and a hunt somewhere. I have to check into that!

Do not miss this event. It will run March 18 through March 20, but I believe the venues will stay for a few days after.  Check the program page on line for more information about the lectures time and place. The region is open to the public now.You are invited .

Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education At A Glance

By Gemma Cleanslate

I am a Host at the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education conference in Second Life again this year so have been exploring the region where it is being held. There are lovely presentation sites, discussion areas, interesting exhibits and so much to see .  I went over to the regions first to have training about our duties there and met several other hosts. Then I took a tour of the region to remind myself of the various venues.

The first day I was able to attend the Keynote address which was very pertinent to second life.To Boellstorff gave a most informative lecture and you can see it here:

https://youtu.be/8vSVNwYW_Z0

One other lecture I attended and enjoyed for this reason. Last year I met one of the owners and creators of Archaeology Islands and wrote about it (link).  So I was very interested in hearing Nova Saunders , (Marion Smeltzer,  Educators and Trainers, VIBE, another creator of that sim, speak about the past and future of  Archaeological preservation in the virtual worlds and the real necessity to do it."Virtual archaeology has expanded with new features and landscapes representing archaeological and historical places that have been part of “real world” archaeological research. Any proposed computer-based visualization will always aim to improve aspects related to the science, research, conservation or dissemination of our archaeological heritage.”

The exhibits are so interesting. This year there was a scavenger hunt that took one to most of the exhibits and once there find the answer to a question and put it on the notecard. This was motivation to really examine and discover what the exhibit was all about. I stopped to enjoy our new reporter, Marcel‘s exhibit on Art from distance places. At one point I sat down with Wordsmith Jarvinen , Chancellor of Caledon Oxbridge University , in their exhibit.

At a swirling vortex I stopped to read about a game that  Letty Luckstone has created relative to climate change and the effect on our waters and world. The directions are there and so is a game hud in case you need to leave and come back. It will help you find the place where you dropped off. The underwater  It is simple , fun and educational and not hard to play.

It will be here until the May 6. There is a possibility of winning a real-life  gift card so read the directions carefully.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/VWBPE%20Central%201/92/18/21

I spent some time Saturday walking in the forest near the Lecture Hall A. It is a lovely serene setting where down at the bottom of a path I found a small temple  where one could place a photo memorial for someone who has passed.  Firery Broome built this  beautiful landscaping and all over the regions. Her work is always lovely.

There were so many lectures and discussions to attend, it was hard to choose. There were social events going on too at various times in the social area. As usual it was well attended and all had a wonderful time. Next year I will definitely attend again and hope to have more time to get to the lectures . I will plan better for my hosting times to choose the lectures to attend. It was an enjoyable experience again and I look forward to next year. In case you would like to go check out the venues and exhibits you can pick up a hud for teleporting here.Look for the green placards .

Scenes From the VWBPE

By Bixyl Shuftan

From Thursday March 15 5o Saturday March 17, the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education event took place. It was a three day conference taking place in six sims with in their words, "an amazing line-up of speakers, workshops, sim demonstrations, poster presentations, open discussions, and more."

Before the event, there was a Press Day on Sunday March 11. Beth Ghosrraven, iSkye Silverweb, and others showed me and other inworld journalists and bloggers about the event and grounds. They were giving out fedoras to those showing up. But I already had one.

There was a special underground area, which I was told most likely won't be around next year. There was a quest down here people could undertake for a prize.

One could rezz a seahorse and ride around in the water. When you got off, it would say, "Thank you for riding Under the Sea Seahorse Lines." Some people did have a little trouble, "?!?! Where is this Sea Horse Taking Me?!?!?!"

There was a skycar that could take us to a few spots around.

Or one could use teleport boards to get around.

Thursday March 15 at 8AM came the opening ceremony for the VWBPE.

Eventually, the ribbon was cut, officially opening the VWBPE grounds.

Ari (arisia.vita) provided some music for a while.

At 9:30AM was the first of the discussions: "Identity, literacy, immersion and presence; joining together the building blocks of virtual world learning"

Gann McGamm, Mark Childs in real life, spoke to the audience in Voice while Marcia Kjeller typed what he was saying. Letty Luckstone introduced him, "Dr. Mark Childs has worked in the field of Technology-Enhanced Learning in the UK for 20 years and is now a TEL Designer at the Open University, his tenth university," Letty told the crowd, "His PhD was awarded in 2010 for his thesis, Learners’ Experience of Presence in Virtual Worlds. Mark was the manager of the Theatron3 project from 2007 to 2009, which developed 20 ancient theatres in Second Life for performance and learning and has co-written and co-edited four books on learning in virtual worlds."

For a recording of the event, Click Here.

Next at 10:30 was "The Minecraft VRevolution: Collaborative Learning." The event had several presenters: Katherine Hewett/TwelfthNight (Avatar), Mary O’Brien/Serena Offcourse, Beth S. O’Connell/Beth Ghostraven, Kim Harrison/Thunder Insippo.

Following that event was an underwater party in the "Octopus's Garden."

There were a number of merfolk and other underwater avies. Me, I just reached for my scuba tank.

At 1PM SL time was when Ebbe Linden spoke.

As the Newser noted earlier, Ebbe wasn't there, but was giving his talk from elsewhere. But there were two Lindens there: Madori and Bianca. Madori would message me, thanking me for covering the event.

There would be a number of discussions and panels over the next few days. Finally on Saturday March 17 at 6PM was the closing ceremony. On stage were LoriVonne Lustre, Pooky Amsterdam, Phelan Corrimal, Letty Luckstone, Elli Pinion, iSkye Silverweb,  Beth Ghostraven, and Serena Offcourse.

Pooky was the host of the event, received with much applause, "It’s great to be here at the VWBPE 2018 entering our second decade.  It’s been an incredible success, appreciation to everyone who participated on all levels, especially our volunteers! Over 2,000 educational professional  come to VWBPE each year, in what represents an important pillar in immersive education. A global grassroots community, using technology to find, learn and maximize our effectiveness in the world around, and in front of us. We are utilizing gateways through to gravitational educational superhighways such as this conference provides.

"As I began this introduction, I wanted to honor an Irish educator, for today is St. Patrick’s Day. In the seeming Zeligness of my life, I happened to be at Stuyvesant High School when Frank McCourt taught there, and much impressed with this quote of his, now read it ~ 'He says, you have to study and learn so that you can make up your own mind about history and everything else but you can’t make up an empty mind. Stock your mind, stock your mind. You might be poor, your shoes might be broken, but your mind is a palace.' ”

"And it hit me, an empty space in the mind is like an empty sim! Fitting into the multitude of our virtual environments think of it,  we can visit palaces or make our own, further creating backdrops upon which to visualize our thoughts and ideas, as well as those of our students. That sim, does not remain empty long, because here much translates from 'If I think it I can do it' or even better, 'if we can think it, it can get done.' Talk about MindStock!

"We even manifest beyond paper and time, and have richly achieved rewards actualized in both our 3D and 4D lives, on and behind the screen due to these platforms, and the VWBPE. And thank you to someone who makes this possible and encouraged our growth and that of Virtual Learning. Who continues to lead us, I am so pleased to introduce the person behind Rockcliffe’s motto - 'Nam et ipsa scientia potestas es' (Knowledge is power) our very own Phelan Corrimal, also known as Kevin Feenan, good Irish names both!

"Each year the conference programs amaze, and this year is no different - we took a cue from the great futurist Alvin Toffler who said >   'The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.' What impresses me most is the focus here on developing 21st century skills for learning, and if we are all too human 1.0 in our physical selves, then becoming an avatar helps make that leap forward to our electronic destinies  where we realize ourselves as actual links to the future. We had more than a few highlights from Bryan Alexander, Mark Childs, Tom Boellstorff and Ebbe Linden/Altberg - what incredible insights from people who are living lives with both feet in the grid and two hands on the keyboards. The revolution will be livestreamed!

"The Social Virtual Reality session was great, props to Lyr Lobo, Gentle Heron and the rest of the panel. Examples of how far we are getting include the METAGAME: Ready Player One Meets Snowcrash - blending of two major literary influences within our virtual reality - how cool is that and Chemistry Experiments in Virtual Worlds! I am smiling just saying that. And I’d like Quadrivium more if I could pronounce it more easily, but the ability to have this kind of high level discussion in real time on STEAM subjects and instructional innovation is a knockout, and gives us tremendous hope for a future we all need to be part of.

"More and more we need one another, and while that is not new, the way we bridge distance with thought leadership is impressive - thank you again to everyone!"

Pooky would then introduce the others on stage, who would speak briefly. Beth Ghostraven would thank several newsletters, magazines, and blogs for covering the WVBPE, including the Second Life Newser.

They would also announce the winner of the 2018 Thinkerer Award: Valibrarian Greg.

To see the recording of the closing, go here. You can also go to the VWBPE page on Youtube Gaming for a list of their recordings.

The VWBPE sims are still up, presumably until the end of the month. So stop by and see the exhibits and places before they fade away.
