Scenes From Bay City's Anniversary
By Bixyl Shuftan
On May 19, the city and community of Bay City celebrated it's 11th anniversary. It was spring 2008 in which this largest of Second Life's urban areas came to be, created by the moles to describe the North American urban environment of the mid-20th century. Every year since, there has been a celebration by the community and it's friends. And this year was no exception.
The action started in Harwich, where those wishing to take part were gathering before the start of the parade.
Marianne McCann was the ringleader of the parade, and beforehand was organizing the chaos. "How're we all doing today?" She asked, "Ready to take to Route 66 and hit the party?"
"I'm still amazed that our little city has managed to make it 11 years. Or 66 years, if we consider that SL has 6 day cycles in one first life day."
GoSpeed Racer may or may not be a "demon on wheels," but that's not exactly the Mark-5.
Noted SL blogger Daniel Voyager was there.
This guy wasn't "sheepish" about his support for Bay City.
Someone was ready to "boldly go" into the parade while another looked like he was ready for a "close encounter."
A Giant Snail racer next to a fishing boat that looks like it made the "deadliest catch."
Kenny Luckless was looking like he was ready to give some "friendly greetings."
Anyone looking for a "Lost Prim?"
Rosie the robot was driving a car that looked like it had a little trouble under the hood.
The sheep from earlier got his own truck, with a few buddies for "sheer" enjoyment.
Finally at 12:30, Marianne shouted, "Okay - everyone ready? ... Here we go!" And the parade started. I zipped to Route 66 to see it pass.
Lost Prim would say of Kenny, "It's perfect. Kenny is like our parade float. ... Well, balloon."
Newser reporter Gemma Cleanslate, on her own horse.
I would zip ahead to see more.
RacerX Gullwing, in his snail truck.
As they neared the end of the parade, finally night turned into day.
And they began crossing the finish line.
"What a great parade. I crashed as soon as I got here. Heheheh."
"I made it, but I am now blind. I have everybody derendered."
Some came in through a more southern route.
Among those to see the people arriving was DrFran Babcock, whom makes only occasional visits to Second Life nowdays, "just wanted to wish Bay City a happy." Unfortunately, her avatar wouldn't rezz properly.
With the parade over, it was time for the music event, Marianne saying, "Welcome all! Let's have some fun!"
GoSpeed Racer, the head of KONA Radio, was the DJ for the first half hour of the concert.
Wendi Linden showed up to join the party. "Hi Wendi! Welcome to the Bay City thing." "Oh em gee," someone commented, "it it a rather fresh Linden, it have that new Linden smell still." Wendi just smiled, "It must be those tree-shaped air fresheners."
But it wouldn't quite be a Bay City event without one particular dance, "We want conga (chuckle)!" "Marianne has to start the conga!" And eventually, the conga line got started.
Among those in the line, a large battlesuit that joined in, "robot conga."
Marianne McCann enjoyed the party along with everyone else.
A half hour after the start, Gospeed stepped down, and live musician Parker Static took to the stage.
At 2:30 PM, Maxamillian Kleene began performing for the crowd. Later on, Melenda Baptiste would sing on stage.
Eventually, the conga line shrunk in size.
It was quite an anniversary event for Bay City.
RacerX Gullwing happened to have made a video of the parade and party. Click Here if the video doesn't play.

SciFi Convention 2019, An Interview With Merky (Richmerk)
by Marcel Mosswood
So I’m ready for the SciFi Con 2019 that is held on May 17-26, 2019! I’m wearing my Star Trek costumes which I made for my Dinkie avatar months ago specifically to present the SciFi Convention 2019. I’ve done with my booth so today my agenda is to meet Merky (richmerk), the Coordinator of the committee for my interview about the SciFi Cons 2019. Here is the interview:

Merky (richmerk), The Coordinator of The Committee
Marcel: Hi Merky, let me introduce myself, I’m Marcel Mosswood, I would like to interview you for the SL Newser. I see that the Scifi Convention is very well prepared by your team. The landscape and the concept of the buildings are very attractive and professional. How long have all these preparations been made from the start?
Merky: Actually, because of real life issues, we got much less warning this year that we needed to build a convention, so everything you see here was created in just a few weeks.

The SciFi Con Sims
Marcel: Wow, that’s a really fast preparation for such a great event! I’ve read from the website that the event is held annually. Can you tell us the beginning of the idea of making this sci-fi event an annual event? Who are the avatars involved at the initial event?
Merky: The Scifi Cons go way back to the early days of SL. I don’t know the exact year because that was before I joined. Back in those days, it was a different group of people. I think originally a Real-Life group called the ‘International Federation of Trekkers’ was the force behind the conventions. When they caught the notice of the RFL, the Cons became more regular and larger.
Marcel: So, why do you associate Scifi Con with raising funds for RFL? Are there special reasons?
Merky: The Scifi Con has been with RFL since I joined the team. It’s a wonderful and worthwhile cause. They’ve always supported us, and because of their encouragement and advice, the Con is more successful now than it has ever been!
Marcel: I can say that is a good collaboration. What is your fundraising target for this year? And besides the fundraising, is there another goal that you would like to achieve?
Merky: In past years, I think the Cons have made around 1 million lindens. Last year we were a little smaller and only got 750k. This year though, Our goal is at least 2 million! There are a lot of generous people out there, the Con team is working overtime, and we have a lot more experienced help this year, so I’m sure we’ll reach it.
Marcel: About your great team, who are your team members? And how do you manage your teamwork to achieve your goals?
Merky: Myself and Debbydo are blessed this year with some great new helpers. We have a dedicated event manager this year, VєηυŞ (shayna.paine), who has worked tirelessly for weeks now to put together a solid lineup of shows and entertainments. The immense central domed building was constructed by Beth Delaunay (isilmeriel). The sims were built by Benjamin Brougham, StarWolff, and Varahi Lusch and Minions. Wolferein Foxdale’s job is basically to fix and make better all the stuff that I build, and mesh things. Kendra Mollsen (koreeah) is the troubleshooter and customer service girl. There are a bunch of other people also that were invaluable helpers both before and during the Con. We keep everything organized through Google Docs and Discord servers. Constant good communication is the key.
Marcel: Wonderful! I can see your work through the appearance of the Con. The last question but this may be inspiring others: Would you like to say something to our readers, maybe some quotes, which always motivates you during this fundraising activity?
Merky: One of the things we did before the Con this year is come up with a theme song that reflects our core philosophy and what we try to accomplish in Second LIfe. Paul McCartney’s Hope for the Future (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=163_C5UVU-I).

The CDS Election Candidates Speak
By Bixyl Shuftan
On Modnay May 13 at Noon SL time, several candidates for the Representative Assembly of the Confederation of Democratic Simulators met at the Colonia Nova Amphitheatre. Showing up were Rosie Gray, Emilia Avindar (Emilia Dagostino), MadmaxSoulLover Resident, and 20180414 Resident (Lyubov). Laura Azalee was delayed somewhat due to real life.
After a few minutes of waiting for latecomers, Lyubov (20180414) spoke first, "I have really enjoyed my time in CDS, and Second Life so far. It has been nearly a year in CDS already. I have felt very welcome here and inspired by what I have experienced. And this has made me want to do more, to not only create my own places and events, but also to participate in government (smile).
"It has been a learning experience. I make mistakes, and will continue to do so! But I feel like this is a special place, and we all have the same goals at heart, to make this a beautiful and enjoyable place to be. I have enjoyed my time on the RA and I feel like we do good work and create a positive impact. I would like to continue to do my part, through modernizing old laws and procedures and thinking ahead to our future. The impacts of new Second Life technologies, and also changing to adapt to the evolving economy and society in SL. I do have strong opinions! But I also try my best to learn from others' experiences and consider our community as a whole. I would appreciate the chance to continue to serve on the RA, to have your vote, and do my best. Thank you."
Next was MadmaxSoulLover, "Well first of all, Thank you all for coming today. And also thank you for not only allowing me into this unique yet very wonderful community of ours, but also allowing me this opportunity to participate in this process and hopefully with your votes, continue to participate further in our government and our future. I know I'm the newest member of our community but I'm learning not only of our history and laws but also our goals as a community and hope to help see them all grow and change as they need to. Thank you."
Emilia Dagostino (emilia.avindar) spoke, "Tthanks to our attendees, and to anyone who may read the transcript later, thank you for taking the time to give thought to this process, which is at the heart of what CDS represents. And inasmuch that we present ourselves to you here as candidates to be that representation for all Citizens of CDS, I have only this basic statement of my positions, which you may see in my profile.
"What approach shall I take? I like both stability and change. I prefer change in the sense of maintaining a fresh, well rendered environment as seen in the Viewer. I crave stability in the sense that we maintain the history and tradition of CDS. Most of all, I value Community, and I would like for us to be inclusive and diverse, and to be supportive of people here who might struggle.
"I present myself for RA, to be a reasoned voice of the Citizens of CDS who will expect me to represent them, as one of five members. ... Soro, my partner, is on the Scientific Council of CDS. We make our home here, too. ..."
Next was Rosie Gray. "I think everyone here knows me, and has likely been at meetings where I've been on the RA. So you know how I operate, pretty much! I think it's important that we have a government that functions here in the CDS. Aand to function, we need to participate, actively, something all of you know, as you all do! Anyway, I've wanted to work through the existing laws of the CDS, starting with the oldest ones, reviewing them, updating, and archiving old ones that are redundant now.
"This past term, we made some real progress with that, for which I thank my fellow outgoing RA members. ... So, I'm not sure what else I need to say, except for thank you for coming today, to my fellow candidates and to you in the audience."
After Rosie finished, there were questions from the audience. Pip Torok asked, "This is to the two who have been in theRA one term : What advice wd you have given your younger selves six monthe ago as you first entered the RA?" This wasRosie and Lyubov. Lyubov answered, "Myself? Patience! I think all will agree to this! (smile) It is still a learning process how Second Life works and CDS too, what the technology is capable of doing, what the community of CDS requires, and just the practical fact of how much time and effort doing anything here requires, and because we are all volunteers, doing this for our enjoyment, this also impacts how quickly things can be done." Rosie's answer was, "Well, I've been on the RA quite a few times now. So not sure that six months has made much difference to how I would/can do things. So, not really sure what else to say about that."Cathy Sabre asked, "I know there has been an effort to update the graphical environment with mesh, which I applaud. Howdo you balance history with novelty?" Emilia answered, "Well, I will begin by thanking Rosie for paving the streets in town, and Sudane and Rosie for updating buildings. I totally approve of these changes, as a Citizen. The visual experience has come a long way, and Delia and others have added realism to natural settings. I like that we have a harmonic here, and the builds don't clash with our history and estate environments. We do let the LUC advise on many of the questions or challenges, and this is an excellent step, having that Land Use Committee."
Rosie's response was, "I think that it's important to remember the spirit of the history of the CDS, and honour the ideas of the founders, even in their what seems to be very crude building, from today's perspective. But I do not think that we need to keep the old buildings. Things have changed so much, if we don't continue to update and evolve, the sims would be nothing but a museum to old SL technology."
Lyubov spoke, "I strongly agree with Rosie's perspective. I appreciate the 'spirit,' but we do need to continue to update to remain relevant and not be a museum to old technology. And it is not only mesh objects, as rosie has shown with her work in the Forum. Using the three-part Materials textures does a great deal to completely refresh an old space. I would think that our founders used the best available methods capable at the time. And they might be disappointed if in the years since, that we have not continued to evolve off of their work."
Madmax crashed, and his answer was delayed, finally saying when he was able, "To be honest, I'm still figuring out my answer to that question. As I'm learning more and more about the community a learning what it has done in the history of it and also what it has planned for the future already." Emilia added, "We do have a handful of sites here that are worthy of preservation. The Monastery and the Temple of Minerva are a couple of my favorites. I'm grateful that Ranma Tardis preserves the Monastery, for instance. It's a real tribute to the longevity of CDS, and that some actually are patrons, and in fact all of us are."
Cathy followed up her question with, "Is there a time line for the renovation? As I remember this venue was extraordinary five years ago, but now it is outdated. Is there a plan to renovate all prim builds?" Rosie asked to answere that, "being on the LUC (smile). As you know, Cathy, it is the job of the LUC to look at the regions and make recommendations on what to update. Unfortunately this last six months hasn't been great with LUC meetings. It's been difficult to get everyone together for one reason or another. So, the region reviews haven't been proceeding that way. However, the work on the CN fishing village, and the forum/inner city of CN has been moving forward. So it's not as thought things aren't progressing. We DO need the LUC to be proactive, to review the regions and make the recommendations to the RA. Having said that, this amphitheatre has not come up as a project to renovate... yet."
It was shortly after that when the discussion came to an end.
As of the writing of this article, the polls are open in the CDS for the local citizens to vote, and will close tomorrow.

14th Raglan Shire Artwalk and Interview With Karmagirl Avro
by Marcel Mosswood
Raglan Shire Artwalk the 14th is being held at May 12 – June 16, 2019. This is an art exhibition involving several sims and includes the largest art exhibition on Second Life involving more than 175 artists. Yesterday, I went around all the sims all day at the Raglan Shire Artwalk accompanied by Karmagirl Avro (Karma Da Squabbit). She explained many things about the Artwalk.

The Raglan Shire Artwalk maps
Karma said that the original intent of the Artwalk was a way for creative people to have a place to display their art. It was originally only for the community members but quickly spread to outside the tiny community. It is a free event, they've never charged rent for it, and this was the sim owners way of giving back as well as fostering creativity both in and out of the community.
The first year the Artwalk had two and it was a three days event. It is now a five-week long event. This one is the largest ever. Karma said that first few Artwalk had about 50 participants, and when she took over as director the Artwalk hit 100 that year. She set goals every year since and have hit them. It is over 180 participants this year, the biggest ever. 40% of the sculpture artists are first time participants to the Artwalk. 20% of the Artwalk participants are new. So even if you have been to every Artwalk you will see something new! “I am always excited to see both new and returning artists to the Artwalk,” said Karma.

Karma answered, “I think art is evolving in Second Life with the advent of mesh. I remember how stunning it was to see mesh sculptures for the first time. There was one particular sculpture last year in Heron Shire that was so stunning I literally gasped when I saw it.”
“I was really excited last year that we had our first augmented reality art, which uses real-life sculptures and uploads them to a photo that can be scanned using an app to bring the sculptures to life! This display by Natalmari72 is back this year in Artwalk Area #4 in Raglan Shire. It's not to be missed!” said Karma while I watched the work of Magic Murti Lila on my Android phone.
