The Flight 93 Memorial Show, And Other September 11 Events

As America goes through a Pandemic that has killed thousands, on September 11 it looked back at another historic crisis nineteen years ago when the country suffered it's deadliest terrorist attack.  There were events large and small across Second Life. A small one was held at the Happy Vixen, a Patriot Day tribute, the night before on September 10. People were reminded about the Homes For Our Troops kiosk, and over a thousand Linden dollars went into it that night.

On September 11 itself, there was a show at the Bob Hope Theater at 6PM SL time.

Including the performers, over 80 people were packed into the sim.

The show got a standing ovation.

On Saturday September 12 was a double event at the Flight 93 Memorial at the same sim.

At 4 PM, JustinElias Anatara would sing live over the radio stream.

At 5PM, people got away from the tower.

And the light show would start.

It was quite an impressive light show, and a reminder than even in times of darkness, light will soon be around to show the way.

Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony at Yellow River Memorial

By Deaflegacy

There are many memorials in September 11 to those whom were lost in the September 11 terrorist attacks. But the one made by Geena Zackerly-Magic (geena.zackerly) stands out for it's size and design. Once at Stagg Island for several years, which got it the name "Stagg Island Memorial," it was recently moved to the Yellow River sim. On every anniversary of the attacks, there are at least two ceremonies at the memorial. This Tuesday September 11, I attended one.

Before the ceremony began, Geena advised us to turn our environmental setting to midnight. She would explain that each wall at the memorial contains every name of a precious life lost that day. The individuals on the Airlines, in the World Trade Center and in the Pentagon were all on the walls. Geena would explain that there is an eternal flame signifying the light of these souls and keeping their memory forever alive. Above the eternal flame rotates the Earth. “This signifies that all countries were impacted by this terrible tragedy. We lost people from all nationalities, colors and creeds that day.” said Geena . “Evil does not discriminate. Angels at each other guard all the individuals honored here.”

“The two recessed waterfalls represent the footprint of each building.” Geena  pointed out. “The beam of light in each footprint signifies each tower and are intended to light up the heavens for our loved ones as a guiding beacon to eternity.”

Geena went on, "The two recessed waterfalls represent the footprint of each building, The beam of light in each footprint signifies each tower and are intended to light up the heavens for our loved ones as a guiding beacon to eternity.

"Andy Bernheim (andy300uk) is honored and proud to wear the uniform as well to be standing here at the ceremony.

“At one point in our ceremony the 'Lanterns of Souls' will rise out of the water (from each footprint) to the heavens, signifying the rising to heaven of the souls of every human being being lost that day.” Geena continued. “Commemorating the strength of the Two Towers and the never ending struggle against all that ie evil, to stand tall.”

“Representing the innocent passengers flown into targets strategically selected by the scum who took the planes over. You will hear the towers being attacked in the background.” said Geena.

While Geena  was giving the presentation, music was being heard. “A live television broadcast that we all watched that day, a very comprehensive description of the events of the day.” Geena  explained about the news coverage that came up.

Dayanara McDonnagh explained that he was only four to five blocks from the Pentagon when it was attacked. It is sad. “All is lost.” he said.

Geena went on to explain, “As the day progressed, every human being felt the need to arm themselves, protect their families, friends, their property and their neighbors. Not really knowing why this happening, who was behind it, why so many innocent people had to die in such a horrible way, for what reason?? How could this act be justified?? By anyone?? With no valid answers to any of those questions all there was to feel was 'vengence.' Someone will pay for this!”

“The world realizes that this tragedy not only effects the families of those taken, but strikes at each person, it has touched us all!! We are all saddened! We have all been violated! Victims family' reach out for their loved ones... praying they made it through everything. Hoping against all hope that they survived.”

Geena pointed the lanterns rising from the footprint of the towers signify the rising of souls to Heaven. “Our hearts have been hardened and desensitized to every day life.” Geena explained. “Reality is more than we can bare. Every day life will never be the same as we knew it. The shock, the pain that all of us have to deal with as to what has happened to our nation, our brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, children and neighbors... our very existence! Only time will reveal what is going to happen. Will this happen to us again? Have we learned to protect ourselves against evil in the world? Will we become complacent... let our guard down? Who can say? Only time!! It is our duty and our responsibility to those we lost to do everything in our power to prevent this from ever happening again. Let us hope for a strong nation and better times as we honor our loved ones in their peaceful rest.”

“A senseless act like this reminds us all that our lives are just a drop of water in a large ocean. At any given time we or our loved ones can be gone. So hold those you love close, EVERYDAY, for tomorrow may never come.” Geena said, “The time has come to accept what has happened... it isn't a nightmare... It's real! We are mad, we want vengeance, someone has to be held responsible for these horrible acts. On the other hand however, our innocents.. our family members, our loved ones are free now. Free from the human suffering brought on to them from these evil people. It's time to let go of their physical beings and embrace their spirits.”

As the ceremony drew to an end, Geena  said, “Thank you for remembering with us. We must NEVER FORGET!”

Six String (roleplayismylife) said that he wrote a song because of this event. He recited his song,

When I woke up that morning, the leaves were changing hues
When a friend called me, and said "Turn on the news!"
The horrors I saw, I couldn't believe my eyes
At first I was so shocked, I couldn't even cry.

It was a fateful day in September
When the Trade Center fell
Fire, and death were all around,
And the world was going to hell

I didn't know, just what I should feel
But then I saw the replay, and I knew that it was real
I didn't know, if I was going to live, or die
I had mixed emotions, and I felt empty in side

On that fateful day in September
When the Trade Center fell
When fire, and death were all around
And the world was going to hell

I asked myself "Is the world coming to an end
Then I hear a voice from above say "don't give up hope, my friend!"
So that's my advice to you, when you've lost your Ameerican pride
Remember 9/11, and all the people who died.

On that fateful day in September
When the Trade Center fell
When fire, and death were all around
And the world was going to hell.

The ceremony had been a very touching one as we remembered the fateful day on September 11, 2001. I have a feeling that we would continue to hold a ceremony every year on that day to remember that day. I think I will continue to go to the ceremony every year because what happened on that day touched me so deep that I cannot shake it loose. Thank you, Geena , for holding the ceremony this year. I will always remember it.

The ceremony was held at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Yellow%20River/64/155/41. The memorial is still there.

The 9/11 Anniversary in Second life (Sept (2009)

Originally published on Sept 13, 2009 in Second Life Newspaper, by Bixyl Shuftan

It was eight years ago that the deadliest terrorist attack on the United States struck, damaging the Pentagon, destroying the New York World Trade Center, and killing about 3000 people. In real life, ceremonies were held across the country. Thousands came together near “Ground Zero.” Other ceremonies were held at the Pentagon, the crash site of Flight 93 near Shanksville Pennsylvania, and other places where people gathered to honor those whom were killed.

In Second Life, a number of memorials have also been built. large and small. Probably the largest (in sim area coverage) and most attended was the September 11th Memorial in the dAlliez Land Headquarters sim. It was a pool of water with a walkway around it, surrounded by four marble walls, etched with the names of the fallen. One corner was open, showing a number of pictures of those who died that day. Rain was falling, adding to the atmosphere of sorrow.

Numerous avatars of all shapes stopped by to pay their respects, leaving behind flowers, wreaths, flags, pictures of Christ, and other momentos. Among one pride of feral cats sitting near one group of wreaths and flowers, “ ... my Grandpa was trying to save some people up in some of the floors, and sadly while it was collapsing, he didn't make it. But he was brave and he saved the people. Well some. (sad) “ (shocked expression) At least he died saving people. (sad)” A vixen looked at the pictures, “... look at them, white, black, Christian, Jewish, Muslim ... “ One man commented, “I was a solider, and spent the next four years of my life shortly after chasing and killing these S.O.B.s. I hope these families are at peace today, for me going over there would be lost.” People nearby thanked him, but he humbly responded, “No, I’m just a small part. ... God bless these families.”

Alliez Mysterio, a real estate businesswoman in Second Life, is the owner of the land the memorial is on, “People started coming in last night and it has not stopped, she told me. “I donated the land, 1/4 sim. It was an honor to do so. And today, increased the prims here to double.... The people coming here today were just wonderful.”

Alliez couldn’t give a total of how many showed up as the sim had been hit by griefers, “records were wiped out. It took over an hour to get the sim up. But Linden Lab was great with the help they gave me. ... Liam Kanno created this Memorial. ... this is the 2nd year it has been in existence. I met a guy here today who found his Dad’s name on the wall. I helped a girl find a friend on the wall. I hope more families will hear of this Memorial and consider adding their loved ones photos to be shared.”

Liam Kanno in real life is Odin Liam Wright, with his own article on the memorial: click HERE.

Regant Estates’ New York NYC sim had another memorial. Two transparent images of the World Trade Center Towers stood high in the air, ghostlike. On the streets nearby were a seemingly countless number of flags, going around the streetcorners. Most were American, but there was an occasional flag from Britain, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Venezuela, and other countries, a reminder the tragedy was international.

The NYC sim, New York City Block, is owned and built by a resident of the real life New York: Cheri Bing. Originally part of another sim, it later moved to it’s own. The Twin Towers have always been a lasting part of the sim since constructed, with American flags and a picture of a red white and blue ribbon: “9-11-2001 Never Forgotten.” For the 9/11 anniversary, the place was made into a memorial. Pictures of scenes of the day taken by a retired detective who was there that day were put up in the lobby and outside. Panels with links to a website for the families of 9/11 dead were set up. Fire trucks were parked outside. Memorial candles were placed on the sidewalk. A plaque with a poem tribute to firefighters was in front of the building. There was also a package that when touched would give someone a 9/11 t-shirt and hand-held candle. Residents passing by made their own contribution by dropping flowers on the sidewalk.

There was also a guestbook in which people could leave messages, Cheri saying, “I'm really glad the founder of the Africa sim asked if i had a guest book, which I bought right away as I think it is very nice to have. I will keep it here always as I will the Families of 911 website. ... Bethlee (Spad) created the lovely prayer plaque to distribute to all”

A media screen was also set up, Cindy Bolero streaming the documentary “9/11” about a group of firefighters whom were among those at the Towers that day. The film was originally going to be a in depth look at a rookie fireman, the camera taking casual scenes every day for the several days before. With the dark day, it took on a whole new purpose, showing the frefighters as they were going in, including some scenes taken from inside the north tower, not previously shown prior to this film. During the film was one firefighter whom anxiously awaited word of his brother, who was somewhere in the stairway of the tower. He was still in when it collapsed. The grieved firefighter was comforted by his peers, “Yesterday, you had a brother. Today, you have thirty.”

Of the people dropping by to pay their respects, many were in police or firefighter uniforms, often with tags identifying them in firefighter groups, “It is an honor to be apart of this remeberence.” There was also an avatar from the Justice League present as a security precaution against possible griefers.

Cheri talked some about the day, “... my son was at the World Trade Center every single day and that day he wasn't there. Also a cousin of mine worked on a higher floor and she had called in sick that day. ... My son's clients were in the towers though. He had courier service. Of course the business was no more after that but at least he lived.” Another resident talked about someone he knew living near the towers, and when they collapsed, a human torso landed on their porch.

Cheri also talked about a near confrontation that night. Some Pakistani shopowners were supposedly celebrating the collapse of the towers, and a number of young adults were talking about going over to fight. Fortunately, the police were there to prevent an ugly scene. One man talked about how at first he wanted the kids to have gotten the chance to beat up the Moslems, but after some time to think instead invited everyone in the neighborhood, including the shopkeepers in question, to gather together for a vigil in honor of those who fell.

There was a little talk about the “Truthers,” those whom thought the 9/11 attacks were not caused by Islamofacist terrorists, but a secret plot from within the US Government. One man commented, “There were plenty of studied done on (the collapse of the towers). The jet fuel and fire caused intense structural damage. I actually work with the wife of the guy who lead it. ... sort of sucked for her. They got death threats and phone calls/letters from all the conspiracy theorists. He was one of the leads of the final independent report. Stephen Cauffman is his name: NIST report at: wtc.nist.gov.”

Besides Second Life Newspaper, the NYC sim's memorial was also reported on by CNN’s iReport, "Not all areas of Second Life memorializing 9/11 were as popular with many visitors. Some commented that a few individuals used the day to attempt to collect personal funds and/or celebrate the day in a less than solemn atmosphere. Many commented that the NYC area by Cher provided a 'tasteful and respectful' approach to remembering the impact of 9/11; making it an excellent community site in the virtual world for people to continue to visit and express themselves."

The vigil at the NYC towers continued throughout the day and night, people still coming in at Midnight. Cheri thanked people for coming by.

The memorial at dAlliez Land Headquarters sim was grand, but eventually it would come down, Alliez eventually passing away from cancer. The New York City Block would fade into the virtual nether a couple years later, taking it's Twin Towers memorial with it.

9/11 in Second Life

Sunday September 11th was the ten year anniversary of the terrorists attacks that took more than three thousand lives in Arlington Virginia, Shanksvile Pennsylvania, and NewYork City. Across Second Life, residents took part in various commemorations across the grid. Some were well-publicized, and drew hundreds of people. Others were quietly attended by only a few. But all honored the innocent victims and rescue workers whom fell that day.

One of the memorials to get the most attendance was most likely the World Trade Center Memorial in the New York NYC sim. Taking a look at the sim a couple days earlier, there were about 3,000 flags, mostly American, placed on the streets. In the northwest corner of the sims, a transparent replica of the twin towers reached high into the sky. Next to both towers was a small memorial park, with a statue of a firefighter leaning down, and bronze reliefs of firefighters on the wall: “Dedicated to those who fell, and those who carry on.” The place wasn’t all memorial, though. Much of the sim was commercial shops

Dropping by the next day, the place was packed with close to fifty avatars. Many were gathered in a small park across the road from the memorial part, listening to various live music performers. A problem developed when a griefer tried to stir up trouble, but few paid attention to him.

The memorial is at New York NYC (71, 179, 22)

The other 9/11 memorial mentioned in the Destination Guide was the 911 Memorial at Stagg Island. Despite the name of the sim (I never looked much beyond the memorial at the outside land in the sim. Large walls of white granite held the names of the fallen as waterfalls behind the memorial. There was a huge brazier, made to look like a torch, the Earth floating over it. Two columns of blue light reached into the sky. The back of the memorial was a waterfall, which was described as symbolizing the “tears of the world.”

On 9/11/2011, there will be several ceremonies in remembrance of the innocent lives lost on 9/11/2001. This will NOT be a show, political statement , or religious event. If you wish to pray in the faith of your choice, please feel free to do so.

Ceremonies were held four times that day. Dropping in between them, I heard both soothing music and narration, at one point the voice spoke, "Thank you for coming here ladies & gentlemen. Now if you don't think Second Life has a heart, if someone says that, tell them … well, you know what to tell them."

Another memorial that got plenty of residents dropping in was the Stairclimb in Aero Pines. Opened a few days before September 11th, many people were continuing to drop by and climb the tall staircase. Some remained at ground level, either watching the documentary up for view, or contemplated about the events that day. The stairclimb had been getting attention from musicians as well, one doing a 9/11 machinima there. More on this memorial can be read in the article Here.

Some events didn’t have many decorations or extra builds. At the Mystery sim, many of the staff gathered along with regulars of events to contemplate what had happened ten years before. DJ Bloodrose writer played songs and excerpts of speeches, a mix consisting of Martin Luther King’s “We Shall Overcome,” to “I Will Remember You,” to Johnny Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag,” to Metalica’s “Don’t Tread on Me.” He also narrated.

“Ten years later, there are still some questions and mystery on what happened and why. Many have theories, but evil is evil, and the attack upon the helpless was a woeful and dishonorable act. And though time passes and for some memories fade. But justice and right, like a phoenix, was reborn from the ashes, and will soar to heights not seen before. Not America or American, not New Yorkers or those losing loved ones, but HUMANITY will become and has become stronger. But we must never forget, or we will be dammed to repeat it.”

Not all the staff were there. The sim owner was absent. At one point, Bloodrose spoke, “Many years ago, before the tragedy, A lady had a dream to be a singer. She worked toward this, and she & her husband had it as a goal. All she did was to improve her voice and learn how to sing. On September 11th, she lost her husband her main cheerleader and father to her daughter. She then recorded a song.” And then after the name and title were announced, the song began playing.

“This is your club owner Alexis 'Tygeria Mirabeau,’ “ Bloodrose told, “who cannot be with us today. But she thanks all of those who remember. ... This is the first year the owner has given permission to speak on her story,” he would explain later, “She is at the unveiling of the memorial and will bestow her blessings on all and thanks from her and her daughter to you all for not forgetting and remembering.”

Much more happened at the Mystery vigil, the details of which can be read on the Queen of Hearts Blog.

Numerous comments were expressed in group announcements. Tuna Oddfellow, who runs the psychedelic “Odd Ball” had this to say, “Boliver Oddfellow, aka Drew Stein, was a SL developer and friend to many of us. He and Tuna used to joke that they were virtually brothers. On this day, ten years ago, while many were running away from the Twin Towers, Bolliver was running in, as a volunteer first responder. Some months ago, we lost him to sarcoidosis. http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/wtc/html/know/physical.shtml”

Club Zero Gravity owner Nydia Tungsten, usually known for her daring choices of songs in DJ events, had some thoughtful comments, “Today is the day. 10 years ago so many people died with out even knowing why, day we will never forget, how we spent the day watching and hoping, a day of evil to be sure, but never forget we also learned of hero's those that risked their own life to help others, and those that paid the ultimate price, over 3000 people lost their lives that day all because one group wants us to believe the way they do, and to make us live in fear, well they failed, we still live, not in fear but with our heads held high, knowing we are not better than they, but our lives mean more, we fight back with fuller lives, so take this day to remember not just the victims, but those you love.”

It was a day of remembrance, both in real life and Second Life. This year did have a couple differences. The NYC sim, made by a Brookliner and had some ceremonies involving the SLFD, was no longer around. It was also the first year in which the mastermind of the atrocity was not somewhere out there, still plotting, but was dead, having been shot a few months earlier cowering behind a woman.

Ten years later, that dreadful day is passing to history, the world a different place, but people still take the time to remember and reflect.

“If we do not remember the past we will be forever doomed to repeat it.” - Nydia Tungsten.

9-11 Commemorations in Mystery, NYC sims

The ninth anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York City on September 11, 2001 was commemorated in a number of places in Second Life in ceremonies large and small. Among the smaller ones, was a vigil at the normally cheerful Mystery sim. One of the larger ones was at the NYC sim, also known as New York City Block.

At the Queen of Hearts riverboat club in Mystery, Amythe Moonlight hosted the small commemoration from 10 AM to 12 Noon SL time, “We take this time today to remember those who were lost in the tragedy, those who lost their lives in trying to rescue others and also all those who have died in the name of or in the service of their country. Please take a moment to reflect on those who lives were lost and join us as we think about the events that day and the tragedy that unfolded.”

She invited those around to share stories. Some did, one saying, “I remember watching it live and I just couldn't believe my eyes... I was so scared and felt so much hurt for all of those innocent people any their families. I'm very proud to be an American and to see watch that happen gave me so many mixed emotions of anger and sadness.”

Another added, “I first heard about the twin towers burning from one of my 6th grade students. I did not believe him. At that time there was nothing to go to to confirm. No TV. No internet. No radio. All things frowned upon at the school and blocked. We were pretty isolated and the administration was keeping things hushed even from us teachers. I heard that a teacher had a TV and was watching it. I went to the class and could not believe what I was seeing. Later during my drive home I wept uncontrollably. I had to stop and pull over several times. Being Teacher I had to put on a show of everything will be all right. In the car I did not have to put on a show. I knew that everything was not all right.“

Amy had her own story, “I am not an American but I was involved in what happened indirectly. I was online when the news broke, playing a game. One of the young boys who played IM'd me. I knew both him and his father from the game. He was 10 years old and he was afraid. His father, he told me, was in the Pentagon and they could not get hold of him. His mother and his grandmother were crying and would not talk to him and he was scared. I sat and listened as he told me what he could see on TV - the pictures of the plane strike on the Pentagon - and what his family were saying. They could not reach his father at all, and the boy did not know what to do. He felt alone and frightened.”

“I talked with him for 3 hours as his fears poured out of him and we discovered more and more about what had occurred. He was frantic though doing his best to be brave for his mother. Eventually he left and I sat and cried. Although I did not personally lose anyone on that tragic day I lived that day through the eyes of a frightened child.”

“The word got around that I had stayed with the boy and listened. In the following days others who lost people came to me with their stories and I heard so many harrowing tales of family lost on the aircraft and in the buildings. Too awful to describe. I will never forget that day or the people I met who's lives it altered forever.”

Minutes later, she spoke again, “Our vigil is now drawing to a close. As we stand here today reflecting on those who have been lost may stand as a symbol of lasting remembrance. Those who have left us too soon will not be forgotten for those who have touched our lives live on in us each day in our thoughts and memories. As we remember not only those we knew but also those known by others let us keep them all dear in our hearts not just today but every day.”

“We will not forget.”

“Thank you all for being here today. Peace be with you.”

Amy got some words of thanks from the audience over the next few minutes. Eventually, all gave their farewells and teleported or logged off.

At the NYC sim, displays were set up at the World Trace Center Monument yesterday and early today. Starting with candles, a few flowers and a couple posters, by this morning it had become the setting for a large tribute. On the sidewalk in front of some benches a stage had been set up, with several American flags draped in front and two flying to the sides. Just in front of that were three crosses, each with a fireman's’ helmet on it. Behind the speakers podium was a fire engine, “Squad CO. 61,” with another flag flying over it and an American Eagle and flag painted on it’s side, “Never forget.” On the wall behind that was “343” in large red numbers, the number of firefighters whom had been killed that day.

To the right was a larger cross, made with two iron girders, as if made from the debris of the towers. To the left, a hook and ladder fire truck with a large American flag flying from it’s extended ladder. There was also a list of names of fallen policemen. All around, there were a number of pictures set up of the tragic day. Inside the World Trace Center buildings was another display of photographs.

Numerous people showed up for the commemoration, the sim at one point holding 66 people. The people showed up in a wide variety of dress and avatars. Some wore commemorative titlers, “We Remember.” One definitely displayed the group title “American Infidel.” Many were residents of New York City in real-life. The guests of honor were the Second Life Fire Department, some of whom are also firefighters in real life, including from New York.

JayFizzle McGinnis, the Chief of the SLFD, began the main ceremony at 1 PM SL time, “Hello, I would like to begin today by welcoming every one, friends, neighbors, brothers and sisters in service. Today Marks the 9th anniversary of our country's worst tragedy to have taken place in recent history. So we sit here today, those of us directly affected and those of us indirectly affected. Remember one thing we have all been affected as a nation, and as a world civilization.”

“It changed us no matter how we look at the day, none of us will be or live the lives we lived prior to 9-11-01. We take this time today to remember the heroes of that day not just the 343 Firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice but the 408 total emergency workers who perished that day and the thousands of souls who perished along with them. Today you will see some deep fire dept. traditions come to life as we remember this day and the toll it has had, not only on our nation But our world. Thank you and God speed.”

“I would like to share with you a quote Made famous By Edward F Crocker, Fire Chief (of) New York, dating back to the year 1908: “

“ ‘ I have no ambition in this world but one, and that is to be a firefighter. The position may, in the eyes of some, appear to be a lowly one; but we who know the work which the firefighter has to do believe that his is a noble calling. There is an adage which says that, "Nothing can be destroyed except by fire." We strive to preserve from destruction the wealth of the world which is the product of the industry of men, necessary for the comfort of both the rich and the poor. We are defenders from fires, of the art which has beautified the world, the product of the genius of men, and the means of refinement of mankind. But, above all; our proudest endeavor is to save lives of men-the work of God Himself. Under the impulse of such thoughts, the nobility of the occupation thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring, even at the supreme sacrifice. Such considerations may not strike the average mind, but they are sufficient to fill to the limit our ambition in life and to make us serve the general purpose of human society.’ “

“Edward F Crocker Chief FDNY 1908.”

JayFizzle then turned the podium over to Nick Pritchett. He gave short speech in voice, of which unfortunately technical difficulties made it hard for some to hear, including myself. Then he asked everyone to hold a moment of silence. The only noise was a faint electronic beep. He typed, “The noise you are hearing is the only sound firefighters heard after the towers fell, this sound is the pass alarm on a firefighters airpack signaling a fire fighter is down.”

JayFizzle spoke again, “The fire dept. runs deep with traditions, many of them dating back to the inception of the American fire service. At the completion of each every alarm, the fire department signals that they have returned to the station and are ready for duty. The next Alarm. In times past, was the bell was used as the signal. We signal today with 5-5-5-5 FDNY that their members have returned home safely and awaits the next assignment. We will now welcome our heroes home by the sounding of the bell with the signal 5-5-5-5.”

The ceremony did have one interruption at this point. Cheri’s microphone was on, and she was arguing with someone who wanted her time, and Cheri trying to explain what she was doing was important. Then in voice, “OOPS! I left the mike on.” followed by chat, “Sorry I forgot that.” The response was a few cheerful answers, “Typical NY household, to be honest, it's good to hear voices from home on this day.” “That's NY, organized chaos.”

The signal was soon ended, JayFizzle saying, “Welcome home brothers!! Rest in peace.” This was followed by some in the crowd going “Amen.” JayFizzle resumed, , “In closing today, I would like to share with you The Firefighter's Prayer, also a tradition in the fire service to remember our fallen.”

“FIREFIGHTERS PRAYER-
When I'm called to duty God
wherever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
whatever be its age
Help me to embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate
Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out
I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me
to guard my neighbor and
protect his property
And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.”

“God speed everyone, and thank you for coming here. In just a few minutes we will be showcasing the many apparatus that serve us in SL and their proud firefighters. So please stick around as we line up for the parade and again thank you for coming.”

Nick led the firefighters to the trucks. Some people moved to the sidewalk next to the street further away from the Twin Towers. Others may have been just camming from where they stood. After they gathered, the firefighters boarded the red trucks, and drove them around the sim.

After that, the event was officially over. A few left right away. Others lingered to chat with others, such as the firefighters sharing stories, and New Yorkers meeting one another on Second Life for the first time. Eventually, most of the people were gone. People continued to drop in and visit the exhibit throughout the afternoon and evening.

A guestbook at the area had a number of comments, among them: “I will always remember and will always pray for the families of the people that lost there lives that day,” “We will always remember,” “Kill the terrorists,” “You are what I'm fighting for,” “As a survivor of 911, I thank the sim owner for this tribute never forget, thank you,” “RIP Mom and Dad - Marlina,” " ‘On this day, angels were born’ seems to say it best. A piece of every American, past, present, and future died on September 11th and the Twin Towers shall forever remain the headstone of American as we knew it. The very fabric of this country changed the day the towers fell. My heart to all of those who lost their lives or their loved ones on 9/11 especially to all the children who will grow up never really knowing their parents.”

The NYC sim is owned by native Brookliner Cheri Bing. The SLFD has a station on the sim. The World Trade Center Memorial in her sim is believed to be the oldest permanent one in Second Life, standing for three years. The 2009 ceremony was covered by Second Life Newspaper and CNN.

In real life, across the country there were many other commemorations. Among them were fire stations holding a moment of silence at 7 AM SLT, the time the South Tower collapsed. In New York, the ceremonies took on a different tone later in the day following the quiet reflections early in the morning. Opponents and supporters of a planned 13 story high mosque to be build a couple blocks from the World Trade Center site held demonstrations against each other. The Muslims say they have every right to build wherever they please, some dismissing those against them as racist. Opponents call the mosque a violation of “holy ground,” citing the 19 hijackers involved in the September 11 attacks were Muslim extremists, some saying the real purpose of the mosque is as a celebration of the disaster. Threats have been implied over both it going up or not. There have been numerous comments made about the controversy. Among them, one person asking the Muslims to either move the site or wait another generation, saying the destruction of the Twin Towers had left a wound on New York and America that was still raw, and would take many more years to heal.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Islamic extremists hijacked four airliners at the same time, two attacking New York by flying into the World Trade Center. About 2600 in the buildings died from the collisions and the structures’ collapse. Besides the Twin Towers, several other nearby buildings were destroyed or damaged by falling debris. In Arlington Virginia, a third plane hit the Pentagon. The fourth plane, believed to be headed to strike the US Capitol Building, crashed into the ground near Shanksville Pennsylvania after passengers heard what was happening through cell phones and attacked the hijackers. A total of about 3,000 were killed.
