The Burning of The Man And The Temple Burn

The burning of the Man was super! Lamplighters, builders, Rangers and visitor burners gathered for the procession two hours before noon Saturday and made their way over to the Man structure that was built by Zoran Manray . There was dancing and merriment for the hours until noon and then it was time. 

Everyone backed away to a respectful distance to watch . The outer structure went first.

Slowly smoke appeared here and there and  then crept over the whole body until the entire man glowed orange and red.

The parts began to fall onto the playa until there was little left  and then all approached and danced among the embers. It was a beautiful successful burn.

Sunday it was time for the Temple. Again it all began with the procession and dancing inside and outside the Temple that was created by Daark Gothly and Planoman. As noon approached all moved to the edge of the region to watch the Temple go. Before the burn began words from the censer appeared in chat. There were the messages left during the week by visitors. Here are some of the thoughts...

“Censer of the Multiverse Temple shouts: Healing of body mind and spirit for myself , friends and family

 "Censer of the Multiverse Temple shouts: I’m quirky I know. I don’t always do things in a traditional way. But I know what’s right. I know how to stand my ground for what I believe to be true. Still, I need Your help dear God. You planted the seed. You nourish me.

"Censer of the Multiverse Temple shouts: Here's to the dream, here's to the forest, here's to the water, here's to the village that reaches for life among them, in harmony and connection, doing no harm.

"Censer of the Multiverse Temple shouts: Bless the many lost and damaged from the virus that changed us all in 2020. May  the suffering, like hot fire make meaningful difference in the world.”

And so many more ....

And Daark Gothly and Pianoman (P1an0man) happily watch their work disappear.

Burn2: The Temple Burn

Last weekend, the Burn2 festival came to a close with two events: the Burning of "The Man," and the Temple Burn. The latter took place on the last day of events for the festival, on October 27. The event took place three times, 4AM SL time for the "European" burn, Noon for those on US Eastern Time, and 8PM for those on the US West Coast and Pacific. Gemma Cleanslate was able to catch the Noon Burn, and took a few pictures.

 On some Burns, the sim is cleared of people with a restart before each burning. It wasn't the case this year, and people remained inside as minutes ticked away for the temple.

 And at Noon Second Life time, the fire begins.

 In real life, anyone caught in a burning building would panic and flee. Not necessarily so in virtual reality. And certainly not at Burn2.

 It isn't long before the interior was soon ablaze.

Gemma wasn't the only writer at the Temple Burn. Daniel Voyager, noted for his blog, was also there.

Gemma was hard at work at the festival, so wasn't able to write much. She did write a review of Ub Yifu's exhibit. Gemma's partner Qwark enjoyed the burnings of "The Man" and the Temple, though thought that they were better in previous years as clearing out the places meant less lag. Daniel Voyager wrote his own review of this year's Burn2, calling it a success, " I’m glad there is still interest for the annual BURN2 event in Second Life after Linden Lab stopped funding it back in 2010. I do think more needs to done to get the word out to more people on the grid to let them know of this well known event." With interest in alternative Grids growing, he suggested perhaps the Burners might see what they could do outside Second Life.

And so another Burn2 comes to a close. Next week, the sims are cleared of builds, and like the desert location in real life, no trace will be left.

Burn2: The Temple Burn

Sunday October 9th was the final day of the Burn2 festival. There were a number of events that day, such as DJ Qwark Allen's performance, one event stood over them all: the burning of the Temple.

Like the Burning of the Man the day before, the event was held at three times to better accommodate an audience from across the globe : European, American, and Australian/Asian at 11:30 AM, 7:30 PM, and Sunday 3:30 AM. The three times were needed, the place was packed.

The Burn2 Temple in it's final moments as an intact structure.

As we waited for the burn, we over heard the messages by the temple censor:

After a while, it began. Four fires are lit at once, and the burning started.

And it doesn't take long before the entire temple is afire.

And as the temple burns, the crowd, both volunteers and visitors, watches.

Still burning, but dieing down.

With all those people, prims, and scripts, it was probably inevitable a sim would appear to vanish.

One of the Lindens, Amber Linden, shows up.

Ashes to ashes.

People continued to hang around after the burn.

A couple burner drummers.

It figures there'd be a dragon avatar there. ;-)

A juggler on stilts. She told us they were up for grabs at a particular camp. But wouldn't you know it, there were too many in the sim to go over.

One last photo before heading out.

After today, the sims close to the public, and eventually they will return to the virtual nether, at least for another year. But there is more more event, the "Skin Burn." And then, the planning starts for Burn2 2012.
