Interview With Ginette Pinazzo on the Zindra Expo
Recently, Second Life Newser talked with Ginette Pinazzo, one of the organizers of the Zindra Expo next month in August. She wanted to explain what it was about, as well as how it would differ from the first one last year. The interview took place on a boat sailing about in the Zindra area.
Bixyl Shuftan: How did the Zindra Expo get started?
Ginette Pinazzo: The first one was last April, ZEXPO 2010. It was started by the Linden Lab group Zindar Expo, as an attempt to create a large convention/festival to highlight the adult mainland of Zindra.
Bixyl Shuftan: Was it any trouble to organize?
Ginette Pinazzo: Back then things were new, just starting. (We) didnt have the focus we have now. I wasn’t producer then, (though) I was involved in it. But this year its an all new staff.
Bixyl Shuftan: So this year, it's off to a more organized start?
Ginette Pinazzo: First the Island itself (caleld ZEXPO Island, coincidentally!) was turned into a venue where we have large seasonal events. For example, in January we had Art Maze 2011. And now we have ZEXPO 2011. This year, (a) much more organized start.
Bixyl Shuftan: Sounds good, what have some of those events been?
Ginette Pinazzo: There is continuity between the very large events (and if you like marketing talk). It’s important because we can build excitement, attract new people to the continent, and slowly increase our PR more and more with each event. It’s all part of an effort to increase Zindra's positive Public Relations.
For example, in the Art Maze, we attracted many Second Life artists, and gallery owners and gallery-goers, builders and photographers became involved. We had a great time...and there's your positive movement forward!
Bixyl Shuftan: How did the expo go last year?
Ginette Pinazzo: I was involved in last year’s ZEXPO in the Marketing Dept. From what I could tell, it went ok. But then it was more like a merchant mall with some events sprinkled in. It was all Zindra merchants. This year is a larger concept, weve opened the concept up.
The way I see it, and partly the reason behind this entire Island's event program, is that we want new people here. So that includes opening things up to get non-Zindran particpants. So the events aren't just about Zindra. It's fantastic for PR and Business Growth and community growth to bring new people and business here. Ginette Pinazzo: This years ZEXPO will have exhibitors from all over Second Life. As I say, Zindra and Beyond.
Bixyl Shuftan: What are among the things are you planning to attract those who don't travel to Zyndra often?
Ginette Pinazzo: Well, attraction is a great word. We are trying to breathe a new sense into the term 'adult' here. Part of our “show message” is that Adult = Sophisticated. We want people top see that Zindra is important because, as the A-Rated mainland, its the most liberating place in Second Life. Yes there will be adult content here, of course. But its not all sex. It's anything and everything adults are free to explore (within our show's guidelines of course). There will be everything from scripting groups to hair designs to building classes to crazy amusement rides. Education, entertainment, arts, and things to buy, games to play.
Bixyl Shuftan: What kinds of rides?
Ginette Pinazzo: Well, our theme this year is "Forbidden Carnival" so expect some crazy twisted rides and carnival games mixed in. We have various vehicle designers too, who have contributed vehicles, so you can "tour" the island in different ways
Bixyl Shuftan: I suppose one's imagination can come up with possibilities about what kinds of games to expect here, but I should let you explain some examples.
Ginette Pinazzo: Hmmm...we have some interesting takes on the “treasure hunt.” We have a “Find The Impossible Objects” game.
Bixyl Shuftan: "interesting takes?" *grins*
Ginette Pinazzo: Hahaha! Accidental pun! sorry! In that game, artist Harter Fall crated different optical illusion-style sculptures and you have to find them throughout the showgrounds. We have also have a Sea Creature Hunt, where you sail around the island trying to find sea creatures (and maybe collect eggs).
The focus is on attractions..not just events. So there will be many things to see and do, regardless of when you are here. We really want to present an interactive environment so packed with fun, you will want to book a hotel room and stay all 10 days.
Bixyl Shuftan: Sounds good. What comes with the hotel room, or around here, do I need to ask? *grin*
Ginette Pinazzo: We have 3 different hotel providers: Acerta VP , DLK and Sin City. Each varies in booking arrangements, ambiance and benefits. We are leaving those choices to the designers of the hotels. But I think its safe to assume each will have its own exclusive content. So booking a hotel room will be a great way to add to your experience. And besides, we ALL know the best parties at conventions happen at the hotel rooms
Bixyl Shuftan chuckles, "I've heard a few stories from real life"
Ginette Pinazzo: We also are doing the hotel thing because we want this to be as immerse as possible.
It was at this moment the boat we were on changed course.
Bixyl Shuftan: Nice little boat. I take it there will be a few more of these at the Expo?
Ginette Pinazzo: Oh yes, boats will be definitely one mode of vehicle available. There will be boats, horses, blimps, crazy cars, cycles, and you will even be able to ride the Floats in our ongoing Forbidden Float Contest.
Bixyl Shuftan: "Forbiden Float Contest?"
Ginette Pinazzo: Yes, one of the innovative things we've done is make the amount of floor space an Exhibitors gets, related to how much they DO at the show. If they host events or provide attractions, they get more floorpsace. This gives us a lot more content and keeps the exhibitors more involved. One way they can get more space is build a float for a parade we have running through the showgrounds. It’s a little bit of extra advertising for exhibitors, a little bit of art, pageantry, and something you can also ride. That is, if you are the type of person who likes to be in parade.
Bixyl Shuftan: I imagine most would would like it, if hopping on didn't crash the float
Ginette Pinazzo: Hahaha! I’m sure we’ll be testing that. So if you want to volunteer as a float-hopper tester, call me!
Bixyl Shuftan chuckles
Ginette Pinazzo: the organizing is going well. I don’t believe in doing any large event without many months of preparation. This eliminates all stress and makes it fun.
Bixyl Shuftan: Makes sense
Ginette Pinazzo: And any problem can be resolved if you allow time. Flexibility is easier when you have time to stretch. So, I do a lot of stretching.
Bixyl Shuftan: Was August chosen as the month, because it falls between two large events, Burn2 and the Relay for Life Walk?
Ginette Pinazzo: Yes, and also to coordinate around SLCC. It’s almost impossible to choose the best dates when there are so many great things happening all year. But I think in the end, we just tossed a Linden out a window to see where he landed on a giant calendar. And that’s how we chose the actual date.
Bixyl Shuftan: *chuckles* That would be something to see.
Ginette Pinazzo: Speaking of Burn, that’s one of the large asscoiations/organisations that has a presence at ZEXPO. Burn will be providing some content. I want to work with other communities and orgs to build strong relationships. I believe in cross-promoting as much as possible. One thing I like about the way we are doing this show, though, it’s not about buying floorspace, it’s a free show to participate in. It’s about creative and active investment. Like I said, the more you DO, the more space you get. You can be a very small company, but if you are willing to do a lot here, you can have more presence than a large company.
Bixyl Shuftan: Sounds good.
Ginette Pinazzo: I think its good business strategy to mix hard working, very involved smaller companies., with larger ones who may not be as, 'involved.' This way the networking can be very very healthy. Also, even before this show opens on August 26, we will using that previous week to run a Business Networking program, so the many exhibitors can meet each other and connect. Second Life is really about people, and when we talk about business in Second Life, it’s often people meeting other people and connecting. It’s a people business in almost every sense.
In Second Life, there is more of a direct connection between a product or service and the person who created it. Think about it. Even an event like this, it’s really just people coming together, choosing to create an experience for each other and everyone else around them. People like myself and merely facilitating that natural, organic process.
Of course, there is always an underlying structure. But ideally, its one that transparent to the observer.
Bixyl Shuftan: I think I've asked most of the questions I had, I did have a couple I could ask just for chuckles.
Ginette Pinazzo: Sure, go for it! But if I laugh too hard, this boat WILL crash. I barely know what I’m doing here.
Bixyl Shuftan: Well, when you mentioned there would be a variety of vehicles here, I take it vans and pickups with lots of space in the back can be expected?
Ginette Pinazzo: Actually, new vehicle creators seem to be everywhere. I have no idea how many will have. I even saw a giant flying dinosaur that people might be able to ride.
Bixyl Shuftan: A giant pterodactyl?
Ginette Pinazzo: Yes! Some of the vehicles will be free, wearble or rezzable, or borrowable. Otehrs will have low cost rental. Some will be items you buy. I haven't noticed vans yet, but why not?
Bixyl Shuftan: "Shock absorbers not included" ? *chuckles*
Ginette Pinazzo: Haha! We ARE having a rock n’ roll car wash. From what I understand, its a car wash operated by a team of Sissies.
Bixyl Shuftan: A team of sissies. Could you explain the term?
Ginette Pinazzo thought the term meant cross-dressing males whom acted a bit submissive, but didn’t feel qualified to define them
Ginette Pinazzo:It definately seems to be a community in Second Life, a very “SL type” thing. I never knew that term until I fell into SL. I learned a lot of terms here.
Ginette and I talked a little about things on the Grid for a few more minutes, but this was basicaly the end of the interview.
For more information on the Zindra Expo, check out the Zindra news blog, and The website “Zindra: Projects and Proposals for a Healthy and Dynamic Adult Mainland.” Considering occasional content, both are “Not Safe For Work.”

Chantal Harvey and the Month of Machinima
When the Linden Endowment of the Arts (LEA) stated "The Month of Machinima (MoM) event" would begin on May 4, 2011, it opened a door to creative perspectives and the magic of machinima.
The event's objectives were to promote the infinite possibilities of writing, producing and editing this wonderful art form.
At the forefront of SL's machinima creation is Chantal Harvey. Anyone watching treet.tv has seen her active promotion and recognized her grace and artistic expression.
According to Chantal, machinima is filming in a virtual world or game. What you see on your screen, is what is filmed. The process begins with the creation of a concept, the writing of a script, finding a location or building a set.
We stand on the LEA sim in the heart of imagination, a playground, as Chantal calls it. A tall cone-shaped theater is the dominating form and numerous screens play one machinima. They are short visions made possible by Second Life and the imagination of the director.
Chantal states that the production is intense work considering the time necessary to record and edit.
“It varies, sometimes I spend six weeks filming and editing for one minute of film the other extreme is filming an SL event and putting it on youtube, without edit, in that case it can be a fast and easy production,” Chantal explained.
She said that machinima is a new genre. The term was created by Hugh Hancock and originates from the words machine and cinema.
“It was a spelling mistake that caught on, we like the word. Originally, it comes from gamers that recorded their battles and races online, because they wanted to share their high scores. People started to edit the shoots, and manipulate stories like that,” she added.
On Second Life, Month of Machinima was organized by the LEA. A group of SL residents, which are supported by Linden Lab, are devoted to the promotion of art in our virtual world. LEA committee members include: Bryn Oh, Chantal Harvey, DanCoyote Antonelli, Dekka Raymaker, Dizzy Banjo, Jayjay Zifanwe, L1Aura Loire, Rez Menoptra, Sasun Steinbeck, Werner Kurosawa and Linden rep Elise Linden.
Chantal said that the LEA site was started by M. Linden, in 2010. When he left Linden Lab, LEA was put on hold, but then Courtney Linden picked it up and motivated others to carry on the project.
“We have weekly meetings and each member of LEA has a different discipline/input. Over the past 15 months, we have become a group that divides tasks and works close together,” said Chantal.
The Month of Machinima presents the best SL productions. The event promotes and motivates others to create new machinima and to showcase their latest productions. The monthly themes are:
August – Design and Architecture
September – Seasons
October – Four elements
November – SL events
December – Endings
To make a submission, log on to; https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?
formkey=dDZ3a2FsYjJMNEM5dnU4X1VZZ1FQZ1E6MQ&ifq&ndplr=1 . Submissions can be made until the 10th of each month. A screening committee then selects the top films. Art related are preferred, but they also choose other work – each month at least 3 films that were submitted earlier in the year. Every first Wednesday of the month, at 7 pm SL time, the new films begin with a screening event and the films run in the special MoM theater throughout the month.
Interest in MoM is generated through Twitter, Facebook, the SL wiki, SL blog, Chantal’s blog and her machinima groups. A lot of it is introduced through networking.
“I’m hoping for more bloggers to write about MoM, as it is the most wonderful machinima event supported by Linden Lab ever. It celebrates the films and the film makers, giving them the credits they so rightly deserve,” she stated.
As for Chantal’s work, she started creating machinima in 2007. In real life, she’s an editor and was part of pioneering art-tv projects. For many years, she ran a TV station in the Netherlands. She’s Dutch.
She told me, “I produce, film, direct, edit, I do SFX and sound design and voice-over work. I advice other machinimatographers. I produce the 48 Hour Film Project for machinima, a real life contest. I run my own MMIF.org Machinima festival in Amsterdam/SL, and I recently started working with Tony Dyson (R2-D2 creator) to produce professional machinima productions.”
Chantal has won several awards, one of which she treasures is “Best Edit” in 2008 48HFP, when she was a contestant. She later became the producer of the event. She has created over 200 productions during the last four years. Check them out at http://youtube.com/user/ChantalHarvey .
What does Chantal foresee for machinima’s future?
“It will go mainstream. I cannot imagine it would not do that. It is fresh, young, growing; it has huge potential to go real life. TV stations all over the world are cutting down on production costs, I believe that if we add a little more professionalism to our films, they will be discovered and appear on TV, maybe even a movie,” she said.

The Mystery Royal Wedding
Sunday July 10th would go down in the history of the Mystery sim as one of its most important days. The occasion: the virtual wedding between sim manager Princess Amythe Moonlight and Bloodrose Writer. Amy’s title was bestowed upon her by Tygeria Mirabeau, whom has long been called the “Queen of Hearts” by staff and regulars alike. Bloodrose has long been called the “Evil DJ” of Mystery, known for his loud and wicked laugh that supposedly can be heard across the sim.
The event was set for 10AM SL time, but the guests began arriving much earlier. By 9:45, there were close to two dozen people already at Mystery. The wedding would not be held in the club, but it was held on a special set build just for the occasion. A platform of wood planks were set just over the surface of the water, with large white sails covering the seating area and ceremony position, an arch with a picture of a Star of David over the moon, with a rose in the middle. At the other end was a circular structure supported by four white columns where the bridesmaids stood.Next to that was a pile of presents, and not far from that a fancy royal carriage, placed there as if to take the newlyweds to the reception. And in the middle of the seating area was a lone chair with a shotgun leaning against it, set up for a touch of Tygeria’s brand of humor.
As the minutes passed, more people arrived. No one was counting, though it’s safe to assume more than forty people showed up, staff, regulars, and friends of both. The bridesmaids were in position, patiently waiting. Among them, Mystery live singer Debi Late. Also waiting, at the ceremony area, was the groom Bloodrose Writer. For whatever reason, he was dressed in a while suit for the occasion. While it’s possible he was not aware what white was supposed to signify, most likely it was part of some kind of funnery. Over the airwaves various romantic and love-themed tunes were played. At one point, the “wedding march” ran for five seconds before it was corrected. Tygeria chuckled, “not so fast.”
Finally, the bride appeared.Mystery’s Princess appeared in a beautiful white gown, which drew a few comments from the guests, “Wow!” “Very beautiful bride.” “Wow indeed!”The dress was designed just so slightly naughty that led one to wonder if Bloodrose or more likely Tygeria were behind the choice. As it turned out, it was only her involved with the dress. With her was Maxx Sabertooth, Mystery’s live R&B singer, who would be giving her away to Blood. After everyone had a moment to see them, the bridesmaids and the men walked down the isle, and then last walked Maxx and Amy. They reached the wedding arch, then Maxx took his place on the chair with the shotgun.
Tygeria then spoke, “Welcome all who have gathered here today. Thank you Maxx Sabretooth for giving your blessing and giving our Amythe away today. I see you have your shotgun, but I feel it won't be needed, for these two are already one. We are just here to publicly celebrate it. So relax, Dear Maxx, Our girl is in the safest hands.”
“Many are here and many others, who cannot be here, send their thoughts, their love and their blessings on this act we all witness here today. This is a wedding in Second Life, but what is Secondlife? Some feel it is an extension of oneself into the realm of the taboo, things you cannot do in first life you can in Second Life. Note how, even I, capitalize Second Life in defiance to the constraints of first life.”
“While this is true and the impossible is possible in Second Life, what if it is an extension but not of the impossible, but of the fated? The what is supposed to be, that has not happened yet, in first life. A dry rehearsal for the big debut. The unveiling of the secret in a way to eventually show the world (first life) this is what I am meant to become. This is the life I want to live and this is the partner, I have chosen. I like my second definition of what is Second Life better.”
“And here in the shadow of our labor of love for five years, the Queen of Hearts, we testify this. . . Amythe Moonlight, Our Amythe Moonlight, Princess of Hearts! Amy to those of us who love her, has been not in my employ but my partnership for almost all of this time. We have worked and slaved for others, now we celebrate her choice in a wedded mate. Not a partner or a flight of fancy but a man whose heart is pure under his gruff exterior.”
“We all know Amy for her art, her building, her clothes designing. But from this day forward, we will all know Amy's heart. For a moment we will see what lies in her heart as she gives it to the man she loves. A man who in time has overcome many obstacles to be here for her, and with her on many days and in large and small ways. Who is this man who claims the treasure of Mystery, the Princess of Hearts? The friend, the mentor, the artist, our precious Amy! Bloodrose Writer. Yes, Bloodrose Writer is this man's name.A valiant defender of good, in a backwards kind of way. A rebel ,a leader and a true, true friend.”
“To some of us forever these two will be the odd couple, but being odd in Second Life. . .as long as it not a TOS violation, there is no odd. In this world with no odds, there will be no obstacle to their success. A gifted man of music and well versed in the written word. A man who is giving and kind once you dig down a few layers.”
(laughter from audience)
“Forthright and fair, patient and kind, All traits that describe this man. The Lead DJ of Hearts, the Mystery Evil DJ, The man who poured his heart out in silence for a time before asking for consideration from our Amy. The Man who wept in the shadows now stands in the sun to be by her side: to be her leader and her greatest supporter. Yes I said her leader, but not in submissive terms. His goal as leader is to lead but not with her behind, but with her at his side and he in turn at hers. To fulfil her hearts desire, thusly consequentially fulfilling his , is his mission. Let no one stand in his way of accomplishing this mission the fates have bestowed upon him. Amy, friend, artist, mentor, creator, Princess of Hearts, let your heart speak to us and this man your heart's desire.”
Tygeria Mirabeau nodded to Amy, and the bride spoke to Bloodrose, “My love, Your eyes captured me the first time we met and part of me remained with you. Years passed and we walked different paths but every time my eyes gazed on you, I would smile remembering that first day. Like the moon in the dark sky, I blaze in light when you are near. Without a word, you can make my heart soar and my soul sing. Your touch strengthens me and your love envelops me. You are my mirror, my truth, my passion, and my desire. With you I am more than I ever thought possible. With you I am complete. With all of my heart I love and cherish you. Today all my dreams come true as I stand here beside you and we begin our walk together on our new path.”
Tygeria smiled, then turned to Bloodrose, “Bloodrose, I know you many years as a DJ, as a friend in my life surpassing this game, and time itself,. What do you offer to show the world that you are more than what you allow most to see and worthy of My Amy?”
Bloodrose then spoke, “I, Bloodrose Writer, do solemnly take thee, my Princess as my wife, to love cherish and honor from this day forward as I have in our past. I commit to you in ways that I have shared with no other. Out of tragedy comes joy and the hope for a bigger and brighter tomorrow. With you through the years as my friend, yes my mentor and my love, we have enjoyed the pains of real life and the sorrows of Second Life. But we have also enjoyed magic as out friendship turned to love. I love you my Princess and shall ever remain faithful and true. No longer shall I roam and I shall make Second Life my home, till that day we that are two become one in all realms. Hard this shall be, but for the world will see. I cherish you my love, my Princess my Amy.”
Tygeria smiled, then spoke again, “Yes, though I officiate here today, I, like so many others claim a corner of the heart of Amy. So speak your heart old friend, drop your guise and let us know the treasure you will give to our greatest gift, Amythe Moonlight, my Amy. . . I, Tygeria Mirabeau, owner of the Sim of Mystery and the Queen of Hearts; Pledge to not only be the official of this union but to nurture it and protect it. In my eyes there is nothing that is stronger than two who have become one in the presence of friends.”
Tygeria asked, “The rings please?” And those acting as ring bearers presented them to the couple. As they exchanged them, Tygeria continued, “All of us gathered together to witness must agree that this is a union of love, made upon the bedrock of friendship and already tempered by time. I can say no more to this than the two have uttered and I find myself in the throws of emotion. Let us Pray! No matter your belief or faith we pray for blessings and strength for this incredible couple. We pray for happiness and smooth travels upon the path they shall walk together forever more. From their mouths, we have seen their hearts and lay low any doubt that these two should be one. We pray for the Writers as a family. And revel in the joy that their commitment brings to us.”
Finally, Tygeria gave the words, “Bloodrose. . . You may now kiss your Amy.” “Gladly,” the groom answered, and the couple embraced into a kiss. The guests then erupted into applause, with cheers for the couple, “Awwww.” “Splendid!!” “Congratulations!” “Jolly Good Show!!” “Congratulations to the beautiful couple,Love, Peace and Happiness follow you all days.” Over the sim came an announcement, “Presenting Bloodrose Writer and Amythe Moonlight ! We wish the happy couple a house full of sunshine, hearts full of cheer, and love that grows deeper each day of the year!” Fireworks then began dotting the skies with their colored lights. Then came another announcement, “Amythe Moonlight (amythe.moonlight) is now known as Amythe Moonlight-Writer”
After a few more congratulations, it was time for the reception. It was not at Mystery itself, but in a rented area. Guests were asked to touch an object to get the landmark. But everyone ended up in an empty building. People fanned out to find the right place, and it quickly was. The reception was at a beautiful marble structure with white curtains hanging down in places, resembling columns, with a sapphire blue dance floor in the middle. There were two chandeliers hanging down, with blue flame licking upwards, in addition to smaller blue flames on the floor near the edge. In front were marble floor sections separated by ice, with a posing place for pictures. And of course in the back of the reception area was the cake.
Tygeria asked for those helping out with the wedding to the posing area, and pictures were taken. Then all were asked to the dance area, where Maxx Sabertooth took the stream, congratulated the couple, and then began singing his rhythm & blues songs. Someone commented over his earlier sitting with the shotgun, “You know after hearing Maxx's voice I am sure glad Bloodrose didn't try to back out today *giggles playfully* He sounds like one who could sing your socks off AND enforce the 'rules'.” Debi Latte chuckled, “Yeah, plus he had the shotgun, hahaha!” “Well that was what I meant by 'enforce' *giggles* but I like the singing better.” “Yes, it rarely pays to argue with a shotgun.” “Unless you are the one holding it!” “Depends on which end you’re on. (laughter)”
Maxx sang for a while, then it was Debbi Latte’s turn. She sang some of her favorite tunes, including the Mystery sim’s theme song “Queen of Hearts.” During this time, Bloodrose's antics as the "Masked Lover" were discussed, some of the guests not having heard about them. That Blood was able to keep up the act in secret for so long impressed them, as well as how he revealed his secret.
As time went on, people had to get going, having commitments elsewhere or in real life. But taking the time to wish the couple well at first, “It was a beautiful wedidng, congrats Amy and Bloodrose. ... Best wishes in your future.” But the majority were abe to stay until the end of Debi’s singing, “Amy and Bloodrose, may the stars shine eternally on your union, may there be Mystery and Adventure around every corner, and may your love for each other only multiply each day. I will need to take my leave, but was so honored to share in your special day.”
Near the end, Tygeria spoke, “I have done a lot of speaking today, and to some it has been clearer than normal. To Bloodrose and Amy, I raise a glass to the heavens and hope that the fates cherish you as much as I do!” Other guests followed, “Amythe and Blood, Thank you for letting us be a part of your special day! I wish you nothing but the best!”
And so, Mystery’s Royal Wedding was at a close, with the guests departing with happy memories and the new couple heading to their honeymoon suite.
“Thank you ... for helping to make our day so wonderful!”
